How could this site be improved?

My top three things would be:
1. Keep all the notifications for a single post together. It's kind of insane to get a line of eight comment notifications for the same post instead of it being condensed and just being shown +8 on the same post.

2. The ability to turn off updates from discussions you no longer want to be a part of. (It very well may be a feature, just one that's not very obvious.)

3. Getting notified about comments that aren't replies to your own on a post you're a part of so you can continue to be more involved in the discussion.

Get rid of the moderators. I thought moderation in IMDb was bad, but at least it was arbitrary rather than personal. Every forum is always going to have people who abuse the report button. Not every forum need to have moderators who always play favorites with these people or always take one side. Look how quickly YouTube's "trusted flaggers" became political for example.

Attempts to ban "trolls" never really work. They just come back, and nobody can keep up with putting them on ignore over and over again.

reply

Sure we can.

Do you consider the Mods to be unfair here?

*ETA welcome to MC, nice to meet you

It improved drastically last week πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

reply

That was a hell of a 'spring cleaning!'

reply

It was long overdue.

addition by subtraction πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

reply

Maybe I just can't see it but a list of moderators/ staff would be nice if we needed anything.

reply

Hi Ethan, glad you joined up as this is a solid placeπŸ‘

Being a Mod/Owner cannot be easy...it's probably as much trouble as it's worth

If the Mods listed their contact info I'm sure you can imagine how much stupidity they would get hit with every day...people are crazy!

reply

True. However the email you contact for support gets ignored so it doesn't leave many options.

reply

Jimbo should post his home address and phone number.

reply

Eh still no good if they don't respond.

reply

With his home address, by which I obviously mean the address for his home, we can go pound on the door, lay siege to the place, send him pizzas he did not order, and so on😈

reply

I got what you meant. I was just saying if someone is intent on not being disturbed than not much is going to work.

Remove all politicians on here.

This site desperately needs SEO/Search Engine Optimization. Anytime someone types in keywords like "[movie] discussion" this sites movie pages should be ranked at the top of google.

The biggest problem with the site right now is that there are too many dead movie forums with no on going discussion right now. There isnt enough people participating in discussion.

reply

I can definitely agree with that.

reply

So salditis, you are saying that the traffic is low.

Welcome to an amateur, underfunded Internet site.

You expected what, exactly?

reply

Seatch engine, etc.? This is IT. What you see is what you get. As The Rolling Stones said, back when they were GOOD, said, β€œJust take it, or leave it . . . β€œ

reply

There should be a list somewhere of every category/board we have commented in. There should also be maybe a like, or rating on every board so we can all keep track of all the movies and TV we have seen.

reply

I would love being able to favourite boards you're interested in, the way we could on IMDb.

reply

I never uses IMDb. I honestly wasn't aware it was a forum site. That sounds like a good idea though.

reply

A lot of people here were IMDb members who found their way after IMDb deleted their forums after giving only two weeks' notice :(

Some people were on those forums for 10+ years. Not that I'm still bitter about it or anything 😬

reply

Did they give a reason why?

reply

Trying to remember what excuse they gave. Oh yeah, it wasn't used by enough people πŸ™„

The real reason was they couldn't figure out how to monetize it enough, and I kept hearing about how Col Needham hated the boards. Although I admit they had become too much like a sewer, thanks to the hoards of trolls that had proliferated there. If they'd gotten decent (non-automated) moderation and nipped it in the bud, that would never have happened. But, water under the message board now.

reply

If you wanna keep track of shows at least, there's an app I use called TV Time that has been very useful for me.
