Your three favorite Mel Gibson performances

The Road Warrior
Braveheart
The Patriot

The Road Warrior
Leathal Weapon
Ransom (yeah I know it's an unlikely pick but I always found it underrated)

reply

+1 for Ransom. I love that movie. My list was at first virtually identical to the OP but I was trying to think of others and Lethal Weapon was one and Ransom was the other.

reply

I can't stand Mel Gibson. Did you ever see his movie about Christ? It was sick, demented, brutal. Yes Christ died a brutal death, but this was unnecessarily sadistic.

reply

It did not bother me at all.

reply

I'm taken aback but also pleasantly surprised. You're actually acknowledging the existence of Christ and that he died an especially brutal death. There's hope yet that your mind might open.

If it appears sadistic, it's because it's historically accurate in depicting the savagery of the Romans. What else would you call feeding women and children to lions in the name of entertainment if not sadistic?

reply

Actually I just watched it because I like the actor who portrayed Christ, Jim Caviezel. I'm an atheist!

reply

I'm fully aware that you are but I'm really puzzled about why you seem to be misinterpreting my comment.

reply

Well, I love Mel Gibson (except when he’s drunk and looking like a wild man). Terrific actor and director! As far as his depiction of Christ’s prelude to His crucifixion, you can’t sugar coat it. In reality it was, to use your words, sadistic, demented, brutal....but accurate. If you cannot bear to look at horrific deeds perpetrated by sadistic human beings....don’t look. I was aware of Gibson’s portrayal of the crucifixion which was far more realistic of anything I have seen. With that in mind...I chose not to view the movie.

Do you also feel the same about footage of the abhorrent deeds done against the Jews and others by Hitler and his henchmen? The Jews say “Never forget”. If we don’t recognize “Man’s inhumanity to man” those actions are repeated. And it has been several times over. Did you know? Millions of people living in Cambodia were killed during the brutal regime of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. Their bodies were buried in mass graves that became known as “killing fields.” The phrase later became the title of a movie about the horrors of the Khmer Rouge era, The Killing Fields. Close to 2 million!

"Man's inhumanity to man"

I remember a movie some years back about the Bosnian War that was really disturbing. I can't remember the name of it offhand. Anyway, the most haunting image in that film for me was a scene depicting a Serbian soldier with his automatic weapon poised between the legs of a woman about to give birth, fully prepared to slaughter both mother and newborn child simultaneously.

I recall a tv mini-series which aired over several nights in the ‘70’s. It starred Ben Gazzara. The title was QB Vll. It was based on the real life Leon Uris novel. I was so haunted by what was revealed during the NAZI war crimes. Even though I had to get up at 5:00 A.M. for work I stayed up late every night to watch...no VCR’s back then. It was the granddaddy of mini-series and was a masterpiece. Here’s the info with the awards it garnered.

This definitely looks very familiar. Now I have a better understanding of what it was about and it's on my watch list.

I remember Ben Gazzara from this program that I watched regularly when I was young: https://moviechat.org/tt0058844/Run-for-Your-Life

Try this link for QB Vll

The prior link didn’t give the complete info. I just ordered the 2 disc set. I can watch Run For Your Life (don’t recall it) with Prime Video. Thanks for the info.

This is somewhat of an interesting coincidence since I started watching a movie today about a war criminal titled, An Ordinary Man, starring renowned actor, Ben Kingsley.

reply

I'm an atheist who also disliked The Passion, mostly for the gore. It's a gross movie. It's like watching Hostel, except it's just one tourist and he's really hard to kill. I love Jim Caviezel, especially The Count of Monte Cristo, but Passion is my least favorite Mel Gibson related project.

reply

Braveheart
Lethal Weapon
The Road Warrior

HM: Get the Gringo

Mel is pretty great imo
It's a shame he's been his own worst enemy for so long

reply

Braveheart
Tim
Lethal Weapon

reply

I have not seen Tim

reply

Tim (1979) is really good. Gibson plays a mentally challenged young gardener. Piper Laurie is in it too. I rated it a 9/10.

reply

Oh yeah I love Mel!

The Road Warrior
Braveheart
Dragged Across Concrete (this was such a great movie, he's still got it)

reply

I was unaware of 'Dragged Across Concrete' until this thread
I'll seek it out for sure
Mel is a jerk but he really is an entertaining guy

reply

He's a troubled guy and can be quite nasty in real life, but I have always loved him as an actor/director.

DAC was great. Dark, gritty and a really violent crime film. Gibson and Vince Vaughn were fantastic as two dirty cops. I highly recommend it.

reply

I'm also very intrigued by this film. I've gotten to a point where I can't stand Vince Vaughn but I noticed it also features Michael Jai White, who I do like, so that creates some balance for me.

reply

We Were Soldiers
The Patriot
Payback

reply

The Road Warrior
Lethal Weapon
Attack Force Z

reply

haven't seen Attack Force Z

reply

It’s an Aussie film about WWII.

reply

I forgot to mention that Sam Neill is also in Attack Force Z.

reply

I'm in agreement with:

Lethal Weapon
Braveheart
Payback

reply

Payback was a decent crime/thriller.
