I have a small favor to ask...

I'm doing a personal study and I would like you to rate and/or add any comment you have on each movie you saw from each of these directors. If you've seen too many of them you can make a top three for each director.

Stonekeeper thanks you in advance.

The 3 directors:

Lars Von Trier
Darren Aronofsky
Yorgos Lanthimos

The Wrestler: 7/10
Black Swan: 8/10
Noah: 5/10
Mother: 8/10
Requiem for a Dream: 9/10

reply

Darren Aronofsky:
-----------------------------
Pi - 8.5
Requiem for a Dream - 8.5
The Fountain - 6
The Wrestler - 8
Black Swan - 6
Noah - 6
Mother! - 6

I love the quick editing sequences in Pi and Require for a Dream. I love the dark, dreary atmosphere of those two film.

Requiem for a Dream has a nice dream-like sequence to it. The Fountain is visually nice but felt empty.

The Wrestler was good for the performances and great for a first viewing but I wouldn't wantch it again.

Black Swan was trying too hard to be some scary mystery/thriller.

Noah I found boring but thought those rock monsters were cool.

Mother! I appreciated for trying to be different but it was repetitive and Jennifer Lawrence was absolutely awful.

Yorgos Lanthimos:
-------------------------------
Killing of a Sacred Deer - 8.5
The Lobster 8
Dogtooth - 8.5
The Favourite - 8

All of these films (except The Favourite) have great tension. Lanthimos knows how to slowly draw out mystery. I love the slow zooms he does.

Von Trier:
----------------
Antichrist - 6
Dogville - 8
The House that Jack Built -7
Melancholia -6

All of these films are incredibly pretentious but Dogville at least felt like an experience for me. None, however, are worth watching again.

reply

thanks, that was some great input for my data

reply

I think the pretense is itself a pretense.

Antichrist is the one that lead me to this conclusion. The story has no use for pretentious imagery/etc, yet its there and very "in your face."

I hated Antichrist. It took months of it being on my mind before I finally just bought it and decided that I loved it, even though my previous hatred had not actually changed.

Maybe we are meant to hate that pretense the same way we should hate the twisted sadistic wife? Maybe the two elements are together for a reason?

In the end, its Fatal Attraction meets Saw.

why are you doing this personal study?

reply

Because im interested in buying some Von Trier and LAnthimos movies and Aronofsky is my favorite director. So if I see people rating his movies highly I know there is a chance we have similar taste, so the input I get on the other movies helps me decide what Im gonna buy for my very own entertainment.
