Overrated Directors?

Who are the ones that immediately come to your mind?

reply

Spielberg.

reply

I agree. I don't even think he's good.

reply

Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurrasic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, Minority Report, Empire of the Sun.... not good???

reply

Disagree
I knew he would come up
Spielberg made a lot of very fine movies...too sentimental? I get it but that's his signature...
A lot of people want to pretend to hate on him because it's cool to do so now...no worries, I don't respect it but it is popular to claim so now
Spielberg is a great director and many of his movies have been excellent

reply

Frank Capra is sentimental. Nobody lists him. Spielberg has a heavy hand and forces it. He's not skilled.

reply

The guy that directed Schindler's List, Empire of the Sun, Amistad, Temple of Doom, Saving Private Ryan, E.T., Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Catch Me if You Can is a try-hard hack?
You have a really high bar in terms of directing HushPuppy!

reply

Yes. I don't think I have a high bar. I like dumb action movies. But even when Spielberg tries to cut down on pretense, he's like a sadistic robot, his sense of humor, people screaming into the camera. Imagine a Spielberg love scene. There's nothing exhilarating about a Spielberg fantasy.

reply

Spielberg does ok with a certain type of film. Indiana Jones, ET, Catch Me If You Can, more old school kind of fun films which is perfectly fine. I like some of those films myself.

Where he fails in my opinion is the heavier stuff, he still approaches it in a childlike or simple manner. He doesn't handle emotional depth well.

reply

Yes. Not that he's not good, but truly overrated.

reply

David Fincher
Paul Thomas Anderson
Ridley Scott
Clint Eastwood
Robert Zemekis
Ang Lee
Alphonso Cuaron
JarJar Abrams
Christopher Nolan
Michael Bay
Danny Boyle
Stephen Soderbergh
Zack Snyder
Guillermo del Toro
Sam Mendes

reply

who overrates Bay? he's usually the target of ridicule.

reply

He's rated very high in the eyes of movie producers.

reply

So every mainstream director?
Haha nice trolling

reply

Nolan.

reply

Nolan is not that good, but only slightly overrated.

reply

Yeah, a little bit :-P The Prestige was an amazing movie. The rest of his fimography hasn't really lived up to that one though.

reply

I love Nolan but I can understand the dislike. The editing in his films is jarring.

reply

People just need to take him down from his pedestal somewhat and stop seeing him as the Jesus Christ of film making. Popular culture is apparently so desperate for real talent that when one guy comes along who is a little above the average standard he is suddenly this genius who can't do anything wrong. Nolan isn't the only example of this problem.

reply

Tarantino
Linklater
Burton

reply

Roman Polanski came to my mind.

reply

When you start a topic like this, it's more interesting if you give an example, and why you feel that way.

reply

ang lee, he is not an artist, his movies are decent.

reply

Spike Lee for sure

reply

Yes
