What are you watching tonight?

I haven't decided yet. Just finished watching a show on Amazon called Would You Believe It. Silly title, and I wasn't expecting much, but it was surprisingly good and entertaining.

"In a world as vast as ours, anything that can happen likely will happen. ... Experience the oddest, the fantastic, the downright impossible parts of history that the textbooks left out."

The episodes on The Johnstown Flood and an Italian immigrant who built (by himself! with scarcely any funds) an underground home, garden, and orchard were educational and interesting.

Maybe I'll watch Downsizing. Ratings aren't very good, but I like the premise and a few people on here enjoyed it.

What's on or soon will be on your screen?

Being There and Dr Strangelove are both worth a re-watch. Did you finish Pennies from Heaven?

Internet went out on me last night, so I didn't get to finish Downsizing. What a strange movie! Will have to finish so I can decide if it's good strange, bad strange, or somewhere in the middle.

Not my cup of tea either, despite the cast. I'd forgotten Walken was in it.

reply

A Simple Plan (98) on Amazon Prime streaming
Looks like a good crime thriller, great cast and db20db highly recommended it just the other day so I'm all in

Best of luck finding something😽

reply

How was it?

Thanks :). I went with Downsizing. Got to see about half of it.

reply

It was great
Hats off to db20db yet again👍
It was sort of like a cross between No Country for Old Men and Fargo
A real fun thriller, went in a direction I wasn't expecting!

How was Downsizing?

reply

My internet connection went down halfway through last night. Had to call this morning so I could finish it! It's a strange movie, but I liked it. A solid 7 for sure, maybe an 8.

Glad you enjoyed A Simple Plan, and had a nice twist for you!

Db recommended The Homesman, which I watched. It's brutal, but very well done.

reply

Bummer!
My 'net went out on me a few nights ago while watching Crank (a Jason Statham action flick)
I need to finish that one

Yep, db has some good reco's for sure

I like this thread, you could make it a weekly thing..?
Could be fun

Thx 😺

reply

I'd watch A Simple Plan except I'm not big on thrillers or crime movies and shows. But who knows, maybe I will! I have Prime, so that's easy enough.

It sucks when it goes out any time, but especially when you're right in the middle of watching something! 😬 (It goes out a lot here, and my landlords are singularly disinterested in doing anything about it. Another reason I'm moving.)

Sure, I could do that. Maybe start it on Friday nights 🐱

reply

Your landlords sound like jerks, sorry you need to pack it all up again

Fridays would be fine
I like the idea of it
I need to respond to Stone's weekly thread because I haven't in ages...I keep dropping the ball:(

reply

They are. It's mostly MrsLL who's a jerk, but since she's the dominant one, he goes along with her. Thanks, gotta say all this moving is getting very old! I've moved more times in the past 2 years than all the former years of my life.

I drop the ball too often with Stoney's thread too 😔. I love that it's there though. He does a great job!

Ok, I'll do my best to do it Friday nights :)

reply

Now I'm picturing a henpecked Mr. LL😆
Hate to say it but I can't temember you not needing to move...sorry for your troubles but you seem to be the undefeatable sort Cat:)
Fridays sound fun
Much respect and best wishes Amiga😸

reply

He is henpecked! You'd never guess it if you met him. I met him several times before signing the rental agreement, and it was only later I met MrsLL because she was working out of town. Oops. Won't make that mistake again.

True, I've been moving ever since MC began 🚴. Lasted a year at this place, although I don't know how 😆. Maybe it's a character-building exercise? I'm going to go with that!

Fridays are something of a tradition around here, so I'll aim for that.

Gracias, amigo!

Just finished watching this movie and couldn't help but notice the coincidental comparison involved.

Binging the UK crime drama Baptiste (2019)

Too much hockey I am told.

Considering Black Summer but the rating keeps falling.

reply

At first I thought you meant there was too much hockey in Baptiste :D

You must like Baptiste a lot, so I won't ask how it was and will assume it's good.

reply

Definitely no hockey in Baptiste as it is based in Amsterdam. Three episodes to go and will try and finish it on this cold and wet Sunday.

reply

Hey, there could be hockey in Amsterdam. No rule against it! How would you rate the show overall?

reply

Baptiste is a spin-off from the series The Missing which I rated 8.5. In The Missing, the Baptiste character would track down missing persons. In Baptiste, they have him investigating the criminal underworld in a human trafficking case. I would have preferred they had stuck to the missing persons formula. So the series is headed toward a 7 unless the final three episodes are really good.

reply

NHL Playoffs, then SNL with Emma Stone. (That BTS group was bizarre.)

reply

(What's BTS?)

reply

The musical guest on SNL last night was a male K-Pop group called BTS. (Blood, Tears & Sweat?) They dance. They dance a lot. If I were a young man, maybe I would enjoy doing this sort of thing, but only maybe. I really like good ol' Gene Kelly, so men dancing is not anathema for me, but these guys have a lot of attitude as part of their stage persona. They are like metrosexual punks. Some of them have their hair dyed, but none are dyed the same color. They dance in sync, but they have portions where they have their own mannerisms, so a lot is going on. They perform very well, but the songs themselves weren't memorable, and it's hard to believe they're really singing with all that movement going on. There are about 8 of them and they take turns passing around two or three microphones. At the end of one of the performances one of the guys acknowledged the audience and predictably ... drops the mic. (Roll eyes.)

reply

I had to look them up. Found the, or a, video of them on SNL. I'm posting it here in case Stratego pOps by. She might like it.

I like their dancing. Good choreography. Good costuming too. Their music isn't for me. It's got an 80s/90s vibe.

Gene Kelly was a brilliant dancer. That scene in Summer Stock when he dances with a newspaper left me speechless with admiration when I first saw it.

Found it! If you haven't already seen it, enjoy :)

I guess I'll watch Game of Thrones. I'm not looking forward to it as much as I used to, though, because the quality has really dipped the last couple seasons and lately I've become more a fan of the book series than the TV adaptation. But I'll watch it.

reply

A lot of people love that show. I suppose it's inevitable that a show that runs this long gets spotty, or goes downhill entirely.

reply

The third part of Line of Duty season five.

reply

God Friended Me, the first hour of American Idol, and Game of Thrones.

reply

I think I'd like to see God Friended Me. What did you think of it?

reply

I like it. It's an interesting, nice show.

reply

I won't be home until around 10:30 pm my time. Not much good TV on at that time but I'm sure I'll turn it on. I'll check the Hockey station first. I think Kolchak: The Night Stalker might be on. That's fun.
I feel so old being a slave to whatever happens to be on. Seems like nowadays people Demand what they want to watch more than let programmers dictate.

reply

I remember being a slave to whatever's on, at whatever time it was on, but the worst part (for me) was all the commercials. Don't miss either one.

I ditched TV several years ago in favour of streaming via Netflix, Prime, and watching YT videos. There wasn't enough on that I wanted to see for me to justify the cost. Recently I ditched Netflix too. Again, not enough there I was interested in seeing.

I do miss TMC, and sometimes PBS.

reply

I'm considering dropping Netflix. I'm running out of things I'm interested in watching. The only show I'm waiting for is the next season of The Crown, but I can always sign up again when the show returns. I just signed up for BritBox ($7 mo) since most of shows I like are British. But I also have a PBS ($5) Passport now and find plenty to watch on these two services. Plenty to watch on YT too, of course.

Oh, and right now I'm revisiting A Touch of Frost. Haven't watched it in ages so it's time.

reply

Same, ran out of things on Netflix I wanted to see. Did you sign up for Criterion? I haven't, but considered it.

BritBox is one I haven't heard of. I'm also a fan of British shows, so will have to look into it.

It's nice to revisit a show you like a lot. I was going to rewatch Lie To Me, but remembered I saw that on Netflix. It may not be there anymore anyway.

reply

I did sign up for Criterion but haven't had the time yet to do any serious watching. Netflix is something I can have on for background company or when I'm doing other stuff around the house. I can stream shows that I don't really have to pay attention to - just check in on it from time to time.

reply

I do the same with some shows on Amazon Prime. Or put them on when I get in bed, and if I fall asleep during them, it doesn't much matter.

reply

Exactly! 👍

reply

Oh, you can try BritBox free for a week.

reply

I might try that after I get settled. Do they have documentaries? I'm partial to Brit docus. I took a brief look, but couldn't find any.

reply

I've only had it for a day so I'm not sure. Documentaries are why I like PBS so much.

reply

I like PBS documentaries, too. I find quite a lot of good ones on YouTube, and Prime has some good ones as well.

reply

There are some docs on BritBox, but to me, it looks like a lot of them are more like "reality show" types. Wed Talks - The Royal Wedding Countdown? Antiques Roadshow? No thanks. I'm more interested in historical docs.
