"Unfortunate" songs

Can you tell I'm on the music thing tonight?

Songs that are unfortunate for whatever reason; silly lyrics, questionable subject, lousy singer, or why - just why did they do it??

How about cannibalism for a "theme?"

MacArthur Park

...
Between the parted pages
And were pressed in love's hot fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants...

Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have the recipe again
Oh noooooooooo

Jimmy Webb’s “MacArthur Park” is one of the most powerfully evocative and epically heart-breaking “love lost” songs ever written. It is preposterous, although it is not kitsch. It is sublime. It’s a masterpiece for the ages.

But it drives some people nuts.

“MacArthur Park” was once ridiculed by “humorist” Dave Barry as the “worst song in modern history” and as having the “worst lyrics.”

I like it.

This was the longest #1 song, until The Beatles said "na na na na na" enough times that "Hey Jude" was longer.

Paul Anka - You are my Destiny

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEcHD_HdMPs

You are my destiny
You are what you are to me.

What's that supposed to mean?

reply

Paul Anka - Having My Baby is cringeworthy even though it is not a bad sounding song

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXZ8NSY2X_g

You're a woman in love and I love
What's goin' through you.
The need inside you
I see it showin'
Oh
The seed inside you
Baby
Do you feel it growin'
Are you happy in knowin' that you're having my baby?

Super cringey lyrics 🤢

He had his cringe-y moments for sure, but how about this Paul Anka:

The theme to the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson before it was his theme.

Ugh, I always hated that song, it's so creepy and ughful.

reply

I couldn't imagine singing that to a woman today.

reply

It was cheesy even back in the day, lol!

Ew, eww, ewww!

"Ya havin' maaah bayybehh!"

This is probably pretty entertaining after a few 🍻

This one always made me laugh.

I know! To think at one time this was kinda cool.

Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball.

The most literal music video in history. Like they aren't trying to use any metaphors or symbolism. It's just her riding on an actual wrecking ball and doing...things.

Sort of goes with her dad's Achy Breaky Heart, don't you think? 😉

reply

Now that you mention it. Like father like daughter.

reply

Arguably the best cover of this song, perhaps even better than the original. What's more; the singer performs in a bumble-bee costume, and it's still less crazy than Miley's take!

Yep, that's another "why?" song.

Madonna version of American Pie was crap

reply

Not as bad as "Sorry". Now why the hell did she use Google Translate for that? The Dutch lyrics are wrong in every single way.

reply

That should’ve been illegal. I can’t think of a song remake I was more offended by.

reply

Can I add ridiculous music video to the reason list?

If so, here's the one and only David Hasselhoff doing ...
Hooked On a Feeling - https://youtu.be/PJQVlVHsFF8

reply

Yes, you may! Another "why??" Or maybe it's a "who thought this was a good idea??"
