Great Unpredictable Actors

Robert Shaw -- was a fine actor, and although he had a diabolical look to him, you still never know what he was going to do.

reply

Shaw was supposedly drunk and The Devil himself to Dreyfuss on the set of Jaws and managed to turn in a fine salty dog performance for the ages

reply

jeff goldblum

Klaus Kinski and Werner Herzog had an odd/insane actor and director relationship
They created good work but seemed to love/hate each other if the old stories are to be trusted
Kinski threatened to kill Herzog (I think it was during filming of Aguirre, The Wrath of God)

Kinski was perhaps a bit too intense but he was pretty entertaining

reply

Actually, Herzog threatened Kinski.. With a gun after Kinski wanted to quit. Herzog said he had 2 bullets in his gun. One for Klaus, and one for him.

reply

DAMN!
That's a wild relationship...I wonder if it was more than a professional tiff because 'two bullets' is a pretty heavy thing to say to a work dude

Might have been more going on there..?

reply

A lot of it had nothing to do with either of them.. The climate was a problem, and there were problems between the natives vs. "The Europeans".. Budgets, etc..

With Fitzcarraldo, Jason Robards couldn't do it (I think it was an illness, not too sure) and Mick Jagger had a Stones tour, and then the problems with the ship itself, and having to re-cast.

reply

Interesting
I love these Crazy showbiz stories

reply

The making of Fitzcarraldo is absolutely bonkers. The natives actually offered to kill Kinski for Herzog.

reply

I really need to seek out a non fiction book about these two, if one was ever written
The stories about them are hilarious and nearly fatal every time!

reply

Check out the documentaries My Best Fiend and Burden of Dreams. The former is about their complicated relationship while the latter concentrates on the Fitzcarraldo production.

reply

Thank you
They are really are a wacky pair and well worth looking into

reply

Both interesting documentaries!

reply

Robin Williams and Bill Murray ad-libbed a lot of their lines
That would be really hard to handle for an inexperienced actor...those guys were sharp

reply

Brando showed up on the set of Apocolypse Now not knowing his lines and at least 50 pounds overweight to play a Special Forces commando...he ad libbed a lot of his dialogue

He sounded like a real pain in the ass to work with

reply

While filming his last feature film, The Score, he insisted on being filmed from the chest up, so he refused to wear pants on most days.

reply

Ha!
Sounds par for the course with Brando
World class weirdo

reply

I wasn't impressed with him at all in that. It appeared to me he was just resting on his laurels with his performance.

reply

It's possible he had family and substance issues going on at the time... Brando could be great but he really was not prepared or devoted to this role and was a tough guy to deal with

I did like his freaky philosophical lines in the third reel...If he were more fit and prepared for the role it would have been an even better movie and it was pretty awesome anyway

I dated an actress - erratic, unstable, unpredictable. Never again!
