A bit glitchy tonight?

My little red alarm bell keeps showing the same few responses and some of my responses are not posting right away...anyone having trouble tonight or is my phone haunted?

This reminds me of a joke:

There is a way to simplify English. First, start with replacing the hard "c" with "k". Not only will this klear up konfusion, but keyboards kan have one less letter. Next, replace "ph" with "f". This will make words like fotograf" 20 percent shorter. Next is the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of silent "e"s in the languag is disgrasful, and they would go. Then replace "th" by "z" and "w" by " v" and later, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou", and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters.

After zis, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubls or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech ozer.

Ze drem vil finali kum tru.

From around the web:

Imagine you met an alien, one way smarter than you. Not some bumpy-headed Star Trek alien either -- a 30-foot slug with arms and 63 pairs of eyes. Since you're a reasonably smart creature yourself, you'd be able to recognize a few of its gestures and expressions. You'd need to devote every ounce of your attention, empathy, and resourcefulness to cobbling together some mutual understanding."

No thank you, I'll be running the other way. Who the heck wants to stay around and communicate with a 30-foot slug with arms?

Being a reasonably smart creature, I’m not going to stay around long enough β€œto recognize a few of its gestures and expressions.” Just pray I can run fast enough to prevent becoming prey!πŸ›΄πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

BTW, did you ever see the episode of Frasier where he was giving his speech at his son’s Bar Mitzvah? I’m not going to spoil it for you if you haven’t seen it. Myself being a trekkie since the first episode of Star Trek, I found the Frasier episode hilarious!πŸ˜‚

"You must be very proud of your son - not yourselves." (^ ^)
The Rabbi could barely keep from laughing himself silly from the realization what Frasier was saying at 18:05 in the video. His reaction had to have been genuine!

I just watched the episode again for the upteenth time. Roz’s remark about she once had a boyfriend β€œwho called IT the bald candy man” was one of the funniest lines ever. Then the priceless line when she remarked to Trekkie Mel after he commented he had never seen her wear that sweater on a Tuesday before. She replied β€œI’ve asked you to take your hands out of your pockets when you talk to me!” πŸ˜‚

We have watched the episodes over and over and still laugh. Another episode won awards...too, too funny....rated one of the best.

Your enthusiasm has my full attention! I'll be sure to see "Three Valentines" soon. I apologize for my late response: had duty for my loving doggie pal, Teeny, my part Belgian Malinois-Basenji mix, who I rescued from bad circumstances.

"The series, 'Star Trek', a science-fiction fantasy, has a national institution supporting hundreds of fan clubs, nearly five hundred fan publications, and annual conventions attracting thousands of faithful enthusiasts. TV's exploration of space, by two Jewish actors, William Shatner (1931-) and Leonard Nimoy (1931-*2015), has been compared to the uncharted travels of Christopher Columbus, who, some believe, was Jewish."

Gene Roddenberry was a genius before his time. I was not aware of the comparison to Christopher Columbus. I have purchased 2 of the first run original series for my grandson. He’s attempting to sell one for me as I want a return. He’s collecting all things Star Trek. I own the complete movie set. I enjoyed β€œEnterprise” so he was buying me a season for Christmas each year. After 3 seasons I gave them to him so he could finish the collection. He knows everything there is to know about Star Trek and Star Wars.

I can recall when Star Trek first aired. I was enthralled by this new adventure in color, glorius color! Never had we viewed anything like it on tv. Now we see how cheesy the sets were, but at the time we were fascinated. I just read the following:

β€œStar Trek is simply an incredibly fun and entertaining science fiction series, though it was hardly appreciated back in the 1960's when it originally aired. Fortunately, it lives on today in re runs, giving Trekkies the ongoing excitement of regularly 'boldly going where no man has gone before.’”

Odd it ended the same year 1969, when Neil Armstrong set his foot on the moon.... β€œThat's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

As far as the new movies, the only thing I liked about them was their choice of Chris Pine as a young Kirk. If you watch him carefully you can see a shade of Shatner...his mannerisms, the inflection in his speaking along with the cadence.

I don’t know your age, but in my lifetime I have witnessed the first of many things. One being this small wooden box in the corner of the living room which had a small moving black and white picture...our first tv....It’s Howdy Doody Time!” The first consumer transistor radio....and so it goes..

reply

"Enterprise" was my intro to the franchise. I did not become a serious fan until just a mere two weeks before Leonard Nimoy's passing in early 2015. My mom gifted me the Original Series film set and I actually enjoyed "The Motion Picture" (1979) and never looked back since.

I am a proud Trekkie; have all the series except for Discovery, which is still new, and "The Animated Series." In addition, I've also collected light-up displays, a numbered belt buckle, tons of books of all kinds; comics, fan fiction, making of materials, Starfleet manuals, and a specially made sentimental scrapbook my mom put together depicting our visit to the set of "Star Trek Continues" in Columbus, Georgia (U.S.) along with Twin B. It was awesome!

I'm in my mid 20s. I'm hoping to at least witness people doing long space travel during my lifetime; feel like I was born too late to see how it first happened and born too soon to really get to watch interstellar travel. It seems like technology is changing faster and faster after each passing day. It's a wonder generations of people have been able to keep up with the pace.

Perspective:

200 years ago, we didn't have railroads. 100 years ago, we didn't have airplanes. 50 years ago, we didn't have spaceflight. 25 years ago we didn't have the Internet.

reply

Wow! You are definitely a heartfelt Trekkie! You have surely delved into the world of Star Trek evidenced by your collections. I wish I could have attended a Star Trek convention in my lifetime.

The two Original Series I purchased are both the 2004 release. One set is almost new in the Star Trek cardboard box.

I have not viewed Discovery as it’s a subscription...waiting for Netflix to pick it up.

reply

I have never been to a convention yet either, but if you're able to go to one of the life-like scale-to-size sets, I wholeheartedly recommend on going to one of those: it won't be nearly as crowded and people are able to take their time, polite and no rush.

Short reply. Took advantage of 7 Day Free Trial for CBS All Access in order to watch Discovery. I refuse to add Star Trek to the title as this piece of trash is disgusting in every way. It demeans Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek enterprise. It’s not canon to his creation which has endured for decades. F-Bombs, political correctness, men bad, women good runs rampant through the series! Shameful!

reply

Gone is the art of subtlety, which I think the creators are now able to speak their minds without having to tiptoe around censorship, has a lot to do with it (though the film industry has become stricter 1990s forward).

It's a sign of the times. Each Star Trek series indirectly addresses many issues going on in their day. In "Enterprise," Captain Archer's crew can represent Americans going overseas, making a splash in foreign cultures it has become familiar with but still having to navigate the waters (Second Gulf War), not wanting to make a muck of things while trying to help his people (the U.S.); one of the infinite ways of looking at the series interpretively.

I have seen Discovery's pilot episode when it aired on TV and its second season premiere when CBS All Access decided to give it a limited 2 week run for free recently through YouTube. The creators are still trying to find their feet. Hopefully it gets better. Last I read, "Discovery" takes place in the Kelvin timeline, the same as the New Trek trilogy with actor Chris Pine.

There should be other "Star Trek" productions in the works too: animated series "lower Decks" by the "Rick and Morty" people, a "Captain Picard" series featuring the return of Sir Patrick Stewart in title role, and a possible "Section 31" show about a the rogue shadow organization that was controversially introduced in "Deep Space Nine."

Let's see where they all go, kspkap.

An interesting and informative article states Discovery is set in the Prime Universe, Kirk’s time. I didn’t care for Abram’s trilogy due to the movies being set in an alternate (Kelvin) universe...although I did like Chris Pine as a young Kirk. TOS fans were so upset over the trilogy (myself included) it led to a discussion of a possible new movie set in the Prime timeline. Chris has yet to sign on to the production.

I appreciate the link you have given; added it to my favorites bar. Seems I may have misunderstood a comment I read from Nerdlist which was probably meant as satire.

Discovery doesn't seem to know what it wants to be and it keeps changing the field goals when its ideas are not panning out on screen leading to inconsistencies:
-Spore drive (mysterious and compelling but lacking thought)

-Everyone at each others throats (not Trek-like; given explanation which feels sudden)

-Even though producers say it's in the Prime universe, as the other Treks, it resembles more of the alternate trilogy.

-Personally, I feel it could use less spoon-feeding to the audience (let us make up our own minds about what we see on screen instead of outright telling us).

-Chris plays an excellent Kirk: the donut-hole of a jerk everyone wants on their side because he's determined. I read there was a pay dispute between Pine and Paramount, his Trek film employer, and indefinite plans to make another film encouraged him to take his presence elsewhere.

Only if we disappear as well.

If we disappear, how would we know that we ever existed, and that we then disappeared?

There are fewer than 10 posters here to whom I’d address this playful question. You are one.

Because you'd never be able to deal with the answers.

Decartes was one of the most agonizing reads of my life.

But, I will ask, if we disappear, but are remembered by whatever remains, would it matter if we knew?

reply

No, it would not. We live for as long as we are remembered; which is why creating a personal legacy for ourselves is second only to creating a family for ourselves. What a wonderful reply. I am happy and impressed, but not surprised.

And yes, wading through Renee Descartes is a slog, but a slog with some benefits.
