What’s your biggest screw up in the kitchen?

Mine: The time I took a casserole out of the oven and set it on a burner that I had forgotten had just been used. The stove was electric, so the coils were still hot. The glass casserole dish exploded and shards of glass shot all over the room. Luckily, no one was hurt. If I'd have taken a second longer to stand up straight I might have gotten hit in the face.

I microwaved a bag of frozen edamame beans and forgot about it for about two weeks.

One of the last steps in making this dish required me to reduce a sauce by 75%. I got impatient, cranked the heat up and then started doing the other steps. By the time I remembered the sauce, it had reduced by about 90%. Inedible 😢

I was reading in a magazine that to disinfect your tea towel/dishcloth putting it into the microwave for a few minutes is quick and convenient. My one caught on fire. The Microwave melted too.

reply

Yikes. And after all that, from what I've read, it doesn't really disinfect them.

reply

I was supposed to have made sure the entire cloth was damp but I put it in dry. 👎

reply

😬 Oops.

I was boiling eggs one time and forgot - then I heard these two loud pops - there was egg and shells everywhere.

reply

You pop the corn, not the eggs, you silly goose.

I really pissed off my Aunt Carol one Thanksgiving when I took her blazing hot shitaki mushroom dish out of the oven, poured it into a serving dish and tossed the hot pyrex into the cold, bubbly sink
That pyrex exploded like a grenade...what a mess!!
Glass flew everywhere😑

reply

I also have an Aunt Carol, although I've never detonated an IED in her kitchen.

reply

To be clear I was not trying to murder Aunt Carol...though Lord knows she can be annoying!
I'm just a terrribly clumsy dope!

reply

I never would have guessed that Pyrex would blow up that way, so it just as easily could have been me.

Were the mushrooms ok?

reply

The mushrooms were fine...I put them in a pretty serving tray before I blew up the kitchen sink area

reply

Thank goodness.

On a very small scale, my son-in-law took the hot meat thermometer out of the roast and put in a dish of water in the sink. Bye bye thermometer. I cringe when I see people run cold water into a hot pan - it can warp it. 😬

You really do have to be careful in the kitchen
I lead with my chin and constantly ruin things:/

Dropping a full bottle of olive oil on the kitchen floor was incredibly frustrating to clean up. Then someone recommended using flour to clean it up. I tried this method when I dropped some eggs and it worked like a charm. I really need to stop dropping things...

reply

Sounds worse than cleaning up the half dozen eggs I dropped once. Slimey things.

Ever tried roasting pine nuts in the oven? You look away for 2 seconds and the darn things turn black
