a movie that would not get made today.

Why is it acceptable for Quentin Tarantino to use "nigger" in movie scripts?

Fyi, "acceptable" is a subjective judgment and you're free to feel otherwise.

Oh and Tropic Thunder was terrible, imo.

It's like why it's hard to see any offense in someone cracking racial jokes about their own race.

If you KNOW something is intentionally in jest or ironic, it lowers the defenses.

Notice that you had no problem with my n-word reference in my initial reply, because you knew it was merely a reference.

Yep, and there is even a line between referencing, and flagrant usage. Note I did not repeat the word in my last post, nor this one.

Why is it for anything ever

There are some movies like that, that many people seem to find funny
that do not do a think for me. Tropic Thunder was one of them for me,
just one stupid gag after another ... like almost all of Adam Sandler's
movies.

I don't like Robert Downey Jr. the least bit, and I find Tarantino to be a
real jerk, but at least he has some real talent. He is great at scripting
tense or funny scenes, dark as they may be. I just do not like the overall
point of his movies, which is usually nothing. I am thinking of the opening
scene and the scene in the cellar of "Inglourious Basterds".

I think it was acceptable because he wasn’t playing a black man, but an extreme method actor who in turn was playing a black man. The cosmetic procedure to make his skin darker was used as an example of just how extreme and out of touch his ego had grown. He was also routinely mocked by the movie’s real black actor.

It was a high wire act but I thought they pulled it off with the right tone. And RDJ was funny as hell in that role.

He was nominated for an Oscar

Why was it ok for him to wear all iron ? Man

Downey thinks he’s funny, and so do his handlers. I don’t, at all. He gets a pass because he plays Iron Man in comic book movies beloved of what shows up on the internet, equipped with the critical perception of, well, you know—what floats up on the internet. Some of them may even be Moderator 5 under a different username. Regardless, Downey gets no pass. He deserves a fail.

I put my funny up against your funny any day of the week, and I don’t look back.

White privlidge had not been discovered yet.

Really. I know that sounds silly but it's true.

It's one of the crazier things that's ever happened in Hollyweird. RDJ has so much charisma that not only did he pull that off, they gave him accolades for it. The sheer audacity trumped any outrage on the matter. You gotta be the right special person to pull that off. I don't think even Tom Cruise or Matt McCon could have done it.
