Any cat people here?

I got a cat today ☺ she's been here about 7 hours now and has eaten like there's no tomorrow (She was in foster care with other cats so probably had to fight for food) , but she hasn't drunk any water or been near the litter tray. Is this normal? I've shown her where the litter tray is and she is house trained I'm just concerned that she hasn't even explored the box.

Good on you for giving Kitty a happy home
Unfortunately I cannot own cats as my daughter has a bad allergy to their dander:/
Your situation sounds normal...cats do their own thing and seem to figure it all out in time
No worries Columbo

Enjoy your new pal

Sorry, those are just lyrics to the old David Bowie song attached to the 1982 film Cat People with Natassja Kinski. I like cats but have never tried to train one and have never had one of my own. I actually spent a couple months with someone else's cat solo. A long time ago, but I don't remember feeding it or changing the box. How odd. The cat was all white and named Pearl.

She probably went to the bathroom before you adopted her. Cats usually go to the bathroom twice a day; once in the morning and one time at night. I would monitor her. If she doesn't use the bathroom tonight, give her some pumpkin (make sure it's 100% pumpkin without any extra ingredients and that will help her go to the bathroom) and place it in her wet food or you could always water down her dry food or wet food too if you don't have any pumpkin. I"m sure she's fine. Cats don't like to be forced in using the litter box. They will go when they are ready.

Love it. Kitten ? Rescue ?

reply

She's 8 months old. A tabby I guess but the pattern is more circular than striped . Her name is Harley Quinn so I'm not gonna change it cos it does match her fur (... harlequin that is😺).

reply

You are going to have so much fun with your cat. I love my cat. She is an orange tabby. She truly is the love of my life.

reply

Give it a day or so

reply

No, I'm a dog person.

I love cats and dogs and iguanas and parrots and donkeys and rabbits and boa constrictors. Why do people classify people by just two animals?

reply

I had a chinchilla but she died in December. She would have been 19 in Jan. Loved her to bits but I wouldn't have another lol .

reply

Aww, so sad to hear. Chinchilla are adorable little fluff balls.

I've had many cats over the past 25 years. Please read as much material as you can about cats. Jackson Galaxy (The Cat Daddy) is a wealth of information about cats! Look him up😺

Cats use the litterbox more than twice a day, btw. Someone on this thread said only twice. I would say maybe 6x a day, give or take.
Cats can have urine issues so watch her.

Can I ask you if you are feeding the same food as the foster home? It's not good to switch drastically. If you want to change the food, do it in a slow fashion. Cats systems take time to adjust. They can get sick if done too quickly. And side note--there's a lot of garbage cat (and dog) food out there. You may want to look into better food for her. It'll cost more but your cat will stay healthier (less vet costs!)

Also, I just want to mention, there's a lot of people food out there your cat should NEVER consume.
Here's some of the top ones to avoid:
Alcohol (obviously)
Chocolate
Coffee, tea and energy drinks
Cheese and milk (TV and movies always make it seem like you should give cats a saucer of milk--this is a BIG mistake!)
Fat trimmings, raw meat, raw eggs and raw fish, tuna fish
Grapes and raisins (can lead to kidney failure)
Onions
Garlic
Bones
Raw dough
Dog food
Xylitol (sweetener; found in gum)

Pretty much all of this goes for dogs too (not the dog food, obviously).

Ask your vet for a full list of foods to never allow your cat to eat/drink (or even look online for info).

One more thing--if your cat isn't already declawed, PLEASE do not get her declawed! They literally amputate these precious creatures. It is not nail removal.

Congratulations on becoming a cat owner! They're wonderful animals.

Wow great reply thank you . All going great now she's settled in. I wake up to her favourite toy by my head every morning so I'll take that as a good sign .... just hope she never catches anything and leaves it there 😖.

reply

Anytime! I adore cats and care deeply about them.

That's cute about the toy. Yes, let's hope you don't wake up to a dead mouse or bird on your pillow 😂😂
A long time ago we had mice in a house we used to live in and owned 4 cats at that time. My cats only played with the mice! Never killed one that I'm aware of. But since the cats were cared for, fed properly, I think they only saw them as toys!😉

What kind of cat do you have? I love them all but mine have been mostly domestic shorthaired. One of them may have had some Blue Russian in him. He was gorgeous. He died just days before his 15th birthday. He brought me so much joy.

reply

Yeah they do, I'd rather have animals than most people tbh lol. She is a brown and beige tabby. Her belly and paws are just spots and her back is a circular pattern rather than stripes. Love her to bits 🥰

reply

Animals ARE better than humans!😂😂😂😎
She sounds gorgeous! I have a couple tabby's too but just a side note, "tabby's" aren't a breed. It's has more to do with the color, just like a tuxedo, calico or tortoiseshell.
Mine are domestic shorthaired, which mine probably would be considered mixed breeds. That's not important to me anyway. They're all animals from the shelter and they're treated like royalty! Spoiled things😇
