Japanese New Wave

is there anyone better than teshigahara? i admit i dont know as much as i would like to so i ask all you experts out there, cheers! more in depth movie talk

this is the greatest place on thenet

reply

No, it doesn't get any better than him. I'd put forth that, though not as widely recognized as the French, Japanese New Wave presents superior craft in both technique and artistry.

reply

Do you know anyone who is even close?

reply

There are other prominent directors during that period who dovetailed within the style - Hani, Shinoda, Oshima, Suzuki et al., but Teshigahara is the one whose work above all the rest embodies the technique and themes associated with the movement. If his films were erased from history, the conventions of Japanese New Wave cinema would not be as clearly defined.
