No, it doesn't get any better than him. I'd put forth that, though not as widely recognized as the French, Japanese New Wave presents superior craft in both technique and artistry.

shareThere are other prominent directors during that period who dovetailed within the style - Hani, Shinoda, Oshima, Suzuki et al., but Teshigahara is the one whose work above all the rest embodies the technique and themes associated with the movement. If his films were erased from history, the conventions of Japanese New Wave cinema would not be as clearly defined.
