-Too Late Blues

cassavetes is definitely one of my blind spots. i've only seen faces so far, & i enjoyed that one a great deal. since the day someone on moviechat mentioned that there are quite a few of his films up on yt, i've had it at the back of my mind to start working through them. since you've planted the seed with this thread, maybe i'll try to get to woman under the influence today.

reply

"A Woman Under the Influence" is my #7 all-time, and I think about half of Cassavetes' movies are online.

reply

yes please watch them. if you like faces you'll love the others

reply

i did give 'a woman...' a watch yesterday, & i liked it a lot. a bit too long for my tastes (i'm a broken record on that - i much prefer shorter running times), but it's clear that cassavetes has had a huge influence on modern indie filmmakers.

thanks!

reply

which directors? (i haven't noticed)

reply

certainly there's a ton of cassavetes in buffalo 66. that's an easy one.

and i think there's a pretty clear line from him to the mumble-core movement of the last 20 years or so. joe swanberg, lynn shelton, the duplass brothers, all those people. if you don't know there films, i suspect you might like some of them, given you like cassavetes.

reply

To be honest I've not seen many of his films but I liked him in The Dirty Dozen and Columbo

reply

i love when he teamed up with peter falk and the reason i mentioned the movie "mikey and nicky"

reply

I also liked him in Columbo. I liked him well enough in Rosemary's Baby until he went cray-cray in the end, but that's not totally his fault.

reply

I didn't like that movie at all, but loved Polanski's first movie, "Knife in the Water"

reply

I thought the movie was okay until the ending. Otherwise, I'm not really a fan of Polanski's work.

reply

Was it the cheating? It did seem a little far-fetched for a movie that had a lot of tension without explosions.

reply

I was reading my Cassavetes Interview (series) and he mentioned his admiration of the movie, "On The Bowery". I just saw it, and I can see the influence BIG-TIME.... If you like Cassavetes, and have seen all of his movies (or not), check this out. It's from 1953, and it's real good.
