And what would you rate it out of 10? I saw Invisible (2017) on January 1st. It is a Spanish drama film directed by Pablo Giorgelli and stars Mora Arenillas as a pregnant teen. It was good, but not great. I would rate it 7/10.
Roma (2018) - A story that chronicles a year in the life of a middle-class family in Mexico City in the early 1970s. This movie is getting a lot of buzz for Best Picture. It is beautifully shot in black and white. The camera stays at a distance and there are a lot of long takes. Very little dialogue in places. The main character was a non professional who was very good. I thought the plot was a bit wanting and somewhat dull. 7/10
They do this every year. This time they were adaptations of Sweet Porridge by Grimm, The Rain Maiden by Theodor Storm and The Galoshes of Fortune by Andersen. I was only pleased with The Rain Maiden, the others were far from faithful adaptations.
I also watched the 1970s Czechoslovak/East German classic Three Wishes for Cinderella.
Pedro Almodovar, All About My Mother (1999). I have the DVD, and any intelligent person I might run into and wants to watch a film in my home with me can watch this free of charge.
In Spanish w/ English subs. "MI JHO! MI Jho! mi jho ..." (sobbing).
I don't speak Spanish, but what I'm trying to convey is the actress crying "Mi Jho" (mee-ho), which I believe is "My Son !"
i watched three colours: red this morning & thought it was pretty great. i've been working my way through the 2012 sight and sound top 250 for the last year or so, & there's a good amount of french & asian & non-english language film there, of course. i'm still just at 119, so i've got a good ways to go.
my favourite foreign language film of last year was cold war. thought it was truly great. not to make it a binary choice or anything silly like that, but when i compare it to roma, which has received such an avalanche of praise, cold war was such a better film to me. it told a personal, touching story across multiple cities & countries while weaving in a story of 20 century totalitarianism, and it was filled with great music as well, & did it all in 88 minutes.
i gave cold war a 4.5/5 when i rated it, but i really should have given it a 5.
I haven't seen Three Colours: Red, but I saw Three Colours: Blue. I thought it was alright, but not as good as I expected. I want to see Cold War as soon as I can.
Of the three Colours, I liked White the least. I thought Red and Blue were both excellent, and I'd love to see any of them again. I may have seen Red twice, so if I could choose, I think I'd like to bask with the sad Juliette Binoche in Blue.
About a Soviet Russian soldier trying to make the most of life in the middle of the Russian Civil War. As online sources will tell you, it's a mixture of everything, most definitely picking up an American western vibe. A striking feature of this film are the long scenic shots displaying the Russian countryside and the tender facial expressions of the characters who manage to convey more with their silent stares than emotions talking would say.
7 out of 10 for having such a poetic nature.
I plan on watching it again sometime this year in order to pick on things not noticed the first time around. Shout out to Kawada_Kira for recommending this movie. It's an attention-getter from start to finish.
While it is a rough and tough film, the protagonist is very relatable, has a lot of charisma, and is very sympathetic in his journey and actions towards others. After watching it, I felt rewarded. Hope you feel the same way once you see the film.
It was my first time ever seeing a Soviet film. Being raised to disdain the USSR for their shortcomings, much of it deserved, especially the Stalin era (Red Scare boogeyman), I am glad you introduced this quality film to me. It shows the people and the inhabitants there trying to live a quiet life in the midst of desperation, desiring peace. Thought the film was a powerful message of hope. Thank you again, Kawa
I saw Black Venus/Venus Noire (2010), I would rate it 8/10.
It is very long and a bit difficult to watch so I don’t think it would appeal to many, actually I read some reviews on imdb and a lot of people didn’t like it.
But I found it quite interesting and sad, it is a true story about Sara Baartman a South African woman who due to her large buttocks and labia was exhibited as freak show attraction in 19th-century Europe under the name Hottentot Venus.
Sleep Tight (11)
A misanthropic building manager in Barcelona takes all of his loathing out on the tenants but one beautiful lady is impossible to break
The unflappable lady is played by Marta Etura, I never heard of her but she is lovely in this...
I just finished watching Sleep Tight. Good movie, very creepy and unsettling. Excellent performances. I had a couple minor quibbles with it, but I would rate it 8/10.
i saw sleep tight about 3 or 4 years ago. i only vaguely remember it, but i know i enjoyed it quite a lot. i might give it a revisit over the next week or so.
