the swimmer

the swimmer starring Burt LancasterVery far out movie. Has anyone seen this?

reply

I heard it was strange so I have avoided it.

reply

It's probably in my top 20... 10/10. It wasn't strange at all. Original with a great story, and very philosophical. One of 3 movies I saw more than once in the same day because I loved it so much. "On The Waterfront" is the only one I saw back to back.

reply

It's not strange only original

reply

Along with "Seconds" it's a feature length movie that captures the spirit of the original "Twilight Zone" series better than the Spielberg/Dante/Miller/Landis - helmed "TZ" movie from the '80s ever did.

I agree.

reply

i saw it this morning because i wanted something similar and it was great at first the idea of life beyond death but then it kind of got muddled and i see they took advantage of the liberal laws showing pussy and boobs

its a shithole country

reply

No way Orson
America is the best country!
Come join us
Only you had better hurry because I heard they're building a great big wall pretty soon and then there will be no getting in or out

reply

Strange? That usually makes me more interested in seeing a film.

reply

someone described it as a bad TZ episode.

reply

Yes. I did not like it.

reply

i'd read that Burt had to learn how to swim to make it.

It's a very sad movie.

reply

Really? I'm surprised that he would have to learn to swim, considering the fact that this guy was extremely athletic. He was an acrobat before he became an actor, wasn't he?

reply

yes. but evidently not a great one.

and yes also, he was not a good swimmer, had to train for the role - here's some nice back story :

reply

Thanks for the info! Interesting. I had no idea.

reply

I believe you and may not click on the link you very nicely provided (thanks!) but I'm a crappy swimmer and I think I could swim the length of a pool w/o having to "train" for it. He'd have to be one miserable swimmer to not be able to convincingly traverse your average backyard built-in pool. Plus he always looked so g-d good, I'm not sure anyone would critique him dripping wet with only a bathing suit on. We all should be so fit.

reply

BL was a perfectionist. it was all on his initiative. he wanted to look elegant, in all things. a lousy swimmer would have ruined the effect.

reply

Have you seen it?
It isn't for everyone, but I happen to like this movie. I'm a big fan of Frank Perry films and anything he is associated with. Try Last Summer.... another interesting book to film adaptation.

reply

Besides this one, I also love his first two movies "David and Lisa" and "Ladybug, Ladybug"

reply

I haven't seen those. I must check them out! Thanks. I also love watching Lancaster in Sweet Smell of Success. amazing!

reply

What Frank Perry have you seen? (Those are on par with "The Swimmer" and both are quite unique in their own right, but I don't wanna spoil it :)

(I also liked "Sweet Smell of Success" and its snappy dialogue!)

reply

Apparently, looking at the filmography, not as many films as I had thought I had seen. LOL! I have others to watch!
Here are the ones I have seen in no particular order...
"The Swimmer"
"Play It As It Lays"
"Diary of a Mad Housewife"
"JFK: A One Man Show."
I had no idea that was a Frank Perry film. I remembered this TV Movie from the 80's. It was surprisingly good with Mike Farrel of all people playing J.F.K. Perhaps that alone would make me remember it, but his portrayal took you out of the fact that this was BJ from Mash. I'd love to see this again!
"Last Summer"
I had also thought that Frank Perry had directed "You'll Like My Mother". I am mistaken. Perhaps it was the feeling of the film. It almost had the same feeling you get when you watch one of Frank Perry's films. Perhaps it's because Richard Thomas was in both films.(Last Summer and YLMM) He played totally different parts though. In You'll Like My Mother, he played a rapist/murderer.... very unlike John Boy!
Last, but not least!😄
"Mommy Dearest"
Of course. Hasn't everyone seen it? Try just watching with the commentary. John Waters does this. He's a hoot! It's like watching with an old friend!
That is my list. As I said, I have others to watch!😄

reply

I have seen most, but "Play It As It Lays" has been on my watch-list and hopefully will watch it sooner than later.

reply

If people think that "The Swimmer" is a bit out there, "Play it as it Lays" is really quirky! I saw it for the first time when I was much younger. I didn't understand it. Later, I read the book by Joan Didion. That helped a great deal so I watched it again. I finally understood much of it, but like many good movies, you can always go back and catch little things you have missed on the first viewing. I liked Anthony Perkins in it. Tuesday Weld was good as well in the lead.

It sort of reminds me of Julia Phillips (co producer of The Sting) and her life in her autobiography, "You'll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again!"

reply

actually "Man on a Swing" is one I have... Never saw "Play It As It Lays" but I was probably averse to it because of Perkins, who just seems nervous constantly.

reply

😄 I'd forget it then. Anthony Perkins will always come off nervous. He has serious issues in this one.
I wouldn't say that this is the best Frank Perry film I've seen. My favorites are
"Last Summer"
"The Swimmer"
"Diary of a Mad Housewife.
..... so far. I have to check out the rest. "Man on a Swing" looks good.

reply

I liked "Last Summer" and "Diary of a Mad Housewife" and I think I gave them both a 7/10... It seems like the time he got divorced, the movies were being made at the same (or better pace at first), which shows what happens to the writing team (he and his ex-wife Eleanor).

reply

I loved The Swimmer! Burt Lancaster is one of my favorite actors of all time.

reply

Isn't he great?
Elmer Gantry ! He was superb! I also love him in The Rose Tattoo!
What the heck! He's wonderful in just about anything!

reply

You got that right! Two of my other favorites:

From Here to Eternity
Birdman of Alcatraz, I've seen it at least five times. Such a beautiful story!

reply

Some fine movies! I love "Birdman of Alcatraz" and "Elmer Gantry" almost as much.

reply

He was great in The Sweet Smell of Success. Such a dark character.

reply

to me, that was BL's masterpiece. probably fairly close to the bone - he was evidently quite agressive, rude, rapacious in character, to go along with some great humanitarian attributes, as well. complicated fellow.

reply

Yes, a LONG time ago.

😎

reply

I watched it with my parents almost 20 years ago, and at first I was baffled by the premise. My mom soon after explained that it was not uncommon in those days for strangers to drop by people's houses for a swim.

reply

the swimming is a metaphor for "getting back home"
listen to some conversations, for example, the little boy who he tells that being #1 isnt what its cracked up to be, etc etc

reply

Yes, I have and would like to see it again. I guess it's an existential movie about suburban ennui, or something like that.

Another unusual Burt L movie is The Leopard. I think it's a period piece and may be in Italian, but I only saw it once and a very long time ago.
