I was required to read the Shindler book and watch the movie for a class I took years ago...It was a great movie but that little kid in her cute red coat gets me too emotional...it really is a gut-puncher of a movie and I tend to avoid it

I think the problem may be that you don't fully understand who were nazis and who weren't.
The uniforms of the German Wehrmacht were generally green. The SS did have grey uniforms.
So if we're talking about the Einsatzgruppen hownos mentioned, sure, no loss there. But as for normal German soldiers, then just no.

When two guys face each other with a gun, most of the time the only solution is to kill the other. But to say they deserved it and to hope it was painful... I understand you need to have that state of mind to survive, but it's not reality. Not all those guys were like Amon Göth, who even the Germans realized was insane. That's why they were going to prosecute him and put him in a mental institution.

Yes, we do need nuance. There were definitely nazis who did horrible stuff like that, but most German soldiers did not. They didn't even have the choice whether to join the army or not. You think that before shooting a German soldier "your boys" checked if they had committed a war crime or not?

Your grandfather was aiming a gun at the German and the German at him. It's either him or the other, that's what combat is about. Where the nuance comes in is whether the German deserves to die a horrible death just because some of his countrymen are fucked up. To say he does, is just complete BS. I'm sure your grandfather killed some non-nazis, which is actually quite sad even if he did it to save his own life.

Different for my family. There was an some sort of altercation when some well-off cousins from Germany came to visit in their fancy car not long after the war, but that's it. My grandparents still went on holiday in Germany. I never noticed any hatred, except for the typical rivalry in football.

As for Japan, some of the things they did were horrible, but so were those two atomic bombs. And they completely turned into a productive, pacifist nation. It's rather admirable.

Shogun, the Germans destroyed my grandmother's house and killed her family. I'm not being nit-picky, the truth is that lots of German soldiers did not assist The Reich by choice. It was inevitable they had to die to free Europe of the Nazi terror, but that does not mean they deserved horrible deaths.

War is the absence of reason...
My grandfather had to hide from the Germans during the war and actually got help from a German neighbour, while my grandmother's other brother was deported to do forced labor in Germany. I've also lost family members in the Bosnian War, a conflict that goes beyond comprehension even more.
My home town still bears the scars of the war and when I see old photos it pisses me off. But I realize that not everyone who helped destroy it was an evil bastard.
