Pareidolia

For example:- Seeing images of faces in everyday objects like floors, wallpaper patterns, clouds, the moon etc.

I never knew it had a name, but it happens all the time.

A lot of folk had a type of pareidolia on the Prometheus boards Dazed.

It can be useful when used properly but sometimes the mind just throws weirdness out there and some people might end up chasing their shadows.

Croft sees real women in cardboard cutouts.

Here's a subreddit devoted to that:

Mammal brains are evolved with instinctual programming to recognize the basic shape of a face, mostly two eyes and a mouth.

It helps prey to survive a little longer by being able to spot a nonmoving predator.

I'd say it goes a little further back than mammals Spanners.

Yeah, I specified that just to refer to humans as animals. Mostly using that point of reference to distinguish this as an instinct, separate from things we learn socially.

reply

And that's fair enough.

I just don't think bypassing vertebrates and trilobites brings in enough of the length of time knowing who our enemies are is as an instinct.

reply

I didn't know it had a name either, go figure. Used to happen to me all the time when I was a kid. Hardly ever happens now.
