What did you watch this week sugar? (12/08-18/08)

Your spouse/parents/friends are tired of hearing you speak your thoughts on the latest movies you watched? Here is the place to do it among friends! Let's judge these movies!!

American Hero (2015 Netflix *MC Special): Here is my review from the first time I saw it and I still stand by it although I would add that it’s too short and ended a bit abruptly: By the trailer, I thought this was going to be a low budget superhero comedy/parody. By the rating (4.9), I thought it was going to be idiotic but maybe funny. So I gave it a try and I was surprised to find a well-acted drama that struck a chord with me. It actually struck many chords and the characters felt scary real. Never would've I thought that I would have all these emotions watching this. It does not rely on special-effects or action at all and the comedy aspect is secondary. It's in its tone, its words, its music; it’s in its heart that this movie stood out. 8/10

Blade of the immortal (2017 Netflix): This movie was a feast for the eyes and a torture for the ears. By that I mean the little girl’s constant shrill shrieking, screeching and squealing was like a needle piercing inside my ears. It almost ruined the whole experience for me. An unfortunate 6.5/10

Kingsman: The golden circle (2017 DVD) Even if I really loved the first one, I had low expectations for this one mainly because of the trailer but also because of the critics. I finally decided to stop putting it aside and it was a great decision. I liked this one too! The action does not exactly fit my taste but it was way better than I imagined. As for the story, I had so much fun with it and the cast was amazing. I mean, Moore, Tatum, Berry, Bridges and Elton John (the guy is hilarious in this!)!!! What more can you ask?? A free thicket to Poppy Land? Crazy place they got there. DWAM! 7.5/10

Extinction (2018 Netflix *MC Special) This movie is entertaining enough for one viewing. It has a few good ideas that were under-developed or just not used properly and it has dumb parts and moments that are too flagrant to ignore. Michael Pena is a good and likable as a secondary character but lack the talent and stature to hold a movie on his shoulders. Because let's be honest, he did not get a lot of support. 6/10

I plan on catching Blade of the Immortal at some point, and I enjoyed Kingsman 2, 7/10, though not as much as the first film, 8/10.

The Church (1989 Amazon Prime) "An old Gothic cathedral, built over a mass grave, develops strange powers which trap a number of people inside with ghosts from a 12th Century massacre seeking to resurrect an ancient demon from the bowels of the Earth." 7/10

Mourning Grave (2014 Amazon Prime) "A teenager, with the ability to see ghosts, returns to his hometown to face his demons." 6/10

Voices from Beyond (1991 Amazon Prime) "When a family man is poisoned to death, it's covered up as a stomach hemorrhage and his spirit returns to aid his daughter in finding his killers." Director: Lucio Fulci 6/10

The Adventurers (2017 NetflixDVD) "The world's top thieves join forces to pull off the heist of a lifetime. But when they find themselves pursued across Europe by a legendary French detective, they'll have to take their game to the next level." Stars: Andy Lau, Qi Shu 7/10

Full Throttle (1995 Amazon Prime) "A top HK motorcycle racer is forced to reevaluate his entire way of life after a serious accident and the loss of a close friend. He struggles to maintain his identity as a risk-taker; and fights to maintain and redefine his relationships with his fiancée, friends, and estranged father. A compelling tale of a man's pride and the emotional catharses of himself and those he loves." Stars: Andy Lau 7/10

Headshot (II) (2016 Netflix) "Uwais plays a young man who washes ashore, an amnesiac with a serious head injury whose past comes back to haunt him shortly after being nursed back to health by a young doctor. Violence ensues. Sweet, sweet violence." Stars: Iko Uwais 6/10

Savage Dog (2017 Netflix) "A story set in Indochina in 1959, a land beyond rule and a time without mercy and the birth of a legend." Stars: Scott Adkins 4/10

I agree that the first Kingsman was better, same rating.

The Adventurers: jean Reno + Andy LAu = Interesting

I think I started Headshot but never finished it.

reply

Headshot is quite a step down from The Raid films, but still quite violent and entertaining enough. I enjoy heist films so The Adventurers was entertaining, but its more Lau's film then Reno's. There is quite a bit of English in it for those that tire of subtitles.

Movies:

-Picnic (1955)
Just a dumb melodrama. William Holden looked about 10 years older than he was supposed to be. He and Kim Novak were also freaking annoying. There were actually no sympathetic characters at all. The ending was ridiculous.

-Valentine (2001)
Silly, predictable slasher. Not a lot of suspense either.

TV Shows:

-Agatha Christie's Poirot - "Murder on the Links" (1995)

-The Flying Doctors - marathon
Well, another channel decided to broadcast the show daily, so I switched over now that they've finally caught up with season 2.

-Saved By the Bell - marathon

-CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - marathon

-The New Detectives - marathon

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

-Buffy The Vampire Slayer - "Enemies" and "Earshot"

Not the best movie watching week for you.

At least Valentine has Denise Richard...

reply

Denise does absolutely nothing for me. But she probably was the most entertaining character in the movie.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle: 9/10

This week was a nice mix of very good and very bad.

Alien: Resurrection - Despite the negative reception it receives, it was my favorite movie of the Alien franchise. (8/10)

Multiplicity - Not sure why this movie isn't popular. I thought it was hilarious. (8/10)

L.A. Confidential (8/10)

The Feels - Not at all what I expected. One thing I expected was for it to not be complete trash, which it was. (3/10)

Action Point - A major disappointment. I didn't laugh once. There was also a dumb flashback narrative structure that was pointless. (4/10)

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - It's difficult for me to explain why I liked this one as much as I did. But I was thoroughly entertained by it. I think I'm actually going to have to watch it again today to fully appreciate it. (9/10)

Fargo (1996) - Very good in every way. (8/10)

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - It was good, but I thought it was a little overrated. (7/10)

My Cousin Rachel (2017) - Not much going on there. (5/10)

Spring Breakers - Terrible all around. (3/10)

Didn't get to Avengers: Infinity War like I had planned. Hopefully that will be this week.

reply

Fear and Loathing is classic. Have you read the book? My favorite HST books are probably "The Proud Highway"and "Fear and Loathing in America."

reply

Ive only read Fear and Loathing and Hell's Angels
Both were pretty amazing
Hunter was one of a kind

reply

The two books I listed are basically his personal correspondences. A must read if you want to get deeper into the mind of the Good Doctor.

reply

Multiplicity: Oh it'S popular in my house let me tell ya. Saw it over 20 times, personal favorite. 10/10

L.A. Confidential: 9/10

Fear and loathing: 10/10

Fargo: 8/10

Spring Breakers: ''Look at my shiiit!'' So annoying. 5/10

reply

I agree with you on Extinction, it was disappointing all around. Where did the kids come from ??

Upgrade (2018) - set in the near-future, technology controls nearly all aspects of life. But when Grey, a self-identified technophobe, has his world turned upside down, his only hope for revenge is an experimental computer chip implant called Stem. One of the better AI movies I have seen in recent years. It is a bit dark but I didn't mind at all. 7.5/10

Bad Samaritan (2018) - A pair of burglars stumble upon a woman being held captive in a home they intended to rob. I thought this was a fairly good thriller. David Tennant is good as the psycho. The ending a bit predictable. 6.5/10

Adrift (2018) - A true story of survival, as a young couple's chance encounter leads them first to love, and then on the adventure of a lifetime as they face one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. This has been done before and better ( All is Lost). Reasonably entertaining. 6.5/10

Lucky Number Slevin (2006) - A case of mistaken identity lands Slevin into the middle of a war being plotted by two of the city's most rival crime bosses: The Rabbi and The Boss. Slevin is under constant surveillance by relentless Detective Brikowski as well as the infamous assassin Goodkat and finds himself having to hatch his own ingenious plot to get them before they get him. Final saw it and enjoyed it immensely. Some good characters in this crime drama. 7.5/10

How It Ends (2018) - A desperate man tries to return home to his pregnant fiancée after a mysterious apocalyptic event turns everything to chaos. Not a bad road movie following a unknown event. Forrest Whitaker is very good. The problem is the end where the production company seemed to have run out of money. 6/10

The Children's Hour (1961) - A troublemaking student at a girls' school accuses two teachers of being lesbians. A tough topic to cover in 1961. Great performance I thought from Shirley MacLaine and one of the supporting actresses who got a Oscar nomination. 7.5/10

The Mosquito Coast (1986) - An inventor spurns his city life to move his family into the jungles of Central America to make a utopia. A fun movie to re-watch just for Harrison Ford's performance. He got a GG nomination for it. Should have gotten an Oscar nom. 6.5/10

Last of the Dogmen (1995) - A Montana bounty hunter is sent into the wilderness to track three escaped prisoners. Instead he sees something that puzzles him. A entertaining Canadian made adventure/modern day western. It is a fun movie not to be taken seriously. 7/10

You watched a lot of recent stuff. Don't forget to contribute to the ''What do you plan to watch this week'' thread. Maybe you'll find people to match your picks.

reply

I need to see OUATIA

reply

It's a classic but it's not for everyone, It's a bit slow. I'll admit that I didn't like it first time round but I grew to love it over the years. Hope you enjoy 👍

reply

For what it’s worth I did not enjoy Once upon a time in the west but I liked Deer Hunter

reply

They're not bad, I prefer The Deer Hunter too. Not seen it for a long time though.

reply

Your right, Extinction had some good ideas, but it was an under developed movie. I think it would have made a good book since the plot was pretty interesting. I wonder if they are going to do a sequel.
