i already chimed in with my thoughts on mother on the aranofsky thread, so i won't bother repeating them here i guess, but i liked it a lot too and found myself nodding along with a lot of what you've said here. i haven't revisited it yet, but i definitely will.

i watched mayhem a few months ago when it popped up on a few streaming services (i believe it's on hoopla and shudder at the moment, at least in my region). i thought it had lots of fun moments, but i agree that it definitely wasn't all it could have been. and i'm also very tired of every corporate person being portrayed as an amoral monster. the film has fun with the caricature, and of course it's fun to beat up on rich people, but that's a cliche that's worn itself out with me, at least.

my own week:

dr strange (2016) 3.5/5 my first re-watch since catching it in the theatre. i remember being a bit disappointed by the somewhat paint-by-numbers origin story at the time, and i guess i'd still say this hews just a bit too close to the iron man template, but visuals really do impress in this film, particularly in that trippy section when the dr first introduced to the astral plane or whatever that was. the 2nd half of the film doesn't quite live up to that promise, perhaps, but it nicely breaks out of that running/kicking/punching marvel formula in a way i really enjoyed.

dead of night (1974) 3.5/5 better than average, reasonably creepy not quite horror movie about a presumed-dead veteran who returns from vietnam in an 'altered' state. it pushes credibility just a bit with the family reactions - why on earth is his sister dragging him out on a double date when he's clearly not mentally functional is a question this movie doesn't answer - but it's a pretty snappy little low-budget item. surpassed my expectations certainly.

two days, one night (2014) 4/5 marion cotillard has a weekend to convince her co-workers to forgo a bonus payment in order to save her own job. this felt like a minor entry from the dardenne's, especially in its slightly repetitive middle-section, but it ends up feeling like more than the sum of its parts, helped by a note-perfect ending.

the lazarus effect (2015) 1/5 i wanted something simple. uncomplicated, trashy fun. and i've seen 'the lazarus effect' pop up on netflix every time i scroll through the horror section. i've noticed that it has abnormally low metacritic & rt scores - but it's blumhouse, and there's mark duplass (always great), donald glover, evan peters, & a fairly beautiful young woman. so it can't be that bad, right? don't let any of that fool you. this is a bland, generic, unimaginative film, a rote, grey, dreary elephant's left-testicle of a movie. there are loads of fun, terrific, trashy horror movies out there. watch all of those first, is what i'd say.

the raid 2 (2014) 4.5/5 i love it, but it is just a bit too long, isn't it? a little baggy in the middle? it's great, but i still think it's not quite as great as the first one. but the car chase is terrific, and the last 1/2 hour truly cooks.

I have not seen any of yours, though I have Mayhem on the list already.

Good 80s action flick, but a bit too over-the-top at times for my taste. I also tried to watch RoboCop 2 (1990), but I quickly had to give it up. Way, way, way too silly. Just a completely different tone, like a kid's movie or something.

I haven't seen any of yours, Stoney, but I may check out Tesla. Mother! sounds interesting but I'm not much of a horror fan, so I'm unsure about watching that one. I’m still making my way through the Midsomer Murders seasons.

However, I also watched the first season of Hart of Dixie (2011) on Netflix. It’s rated 7.8 on IMDb, and the premise of the series is promising: a new, young New York doctor is refused the cardiac fellowship she was expecting so she accepts an offer to work for a GP in small-town Bluebell, Alabama to improve her bedside manner. I’d describe the show as a small-town comedy soap opera. The medical aspect takes a seat at the very back of the bus, though. How can a cardiac surgeon who dresses like a high-price call girl be taken seriously as a doctor? And many of the women characters act like they’re still in high school. Actually, come to think of it, some of the men do, too. However, there are some interesting relationships that sometimes feel like a game of musical beds. There are a few surprises along the way, so as long as you remember it’s just light-hearted entertainment, it’s not too bad. Maybe I was expecting more due to the pretty solid rating. 6/10

Midnight Cowboy (1969) - A naive hustler travels from Texas to New York City to seek personal fortune but, in the process, finds himself a new friend. A great buddy movie and two Oscar nominated performances from Voight and Hoffman. Hoffman is particularly good as Ratso. A dark comedy in many ways. 7.5/10

Papillon (1973) - A man befriends a fellow criminal as the two of them begin serving their sentence on a dreadful prison island, which inspires the man to plot his escape. Another buddy movie in a sense with McQueen and Hoffman. Both were great with no nominations this time. A great prison movie. 8/10

The Conversation (1974) - A paranoid, secretive surveillance expert has a crisis of conscience when he suspects that a couple, on whom he is spying, will be murdered. This was great until the last 10 minutes or so. You ca either of two ways with the ending. After reading the threads the debate about this movie continues 40 years after the fact. Hackman was great in the lead role. Also see a young Harrison Ford and Cindy Williams. 6.5/10

Three Days of the Condor (1975) - A bookish CIA researcher finds all his co-workers dead, and must outwit those responsible until he figures out who he can really trust. I am not a big Redford fan but this is one of his better performances. A very good plot involving a cabal within the CIA. Max von Sydow is great in the assassin role. 7.5/10

The Day of the Jackal (1973) - A professional assassin codenamed "Jackal" plots to kill Charles de Gaulle, the President of France. First time seeing it in 40 years and it is still a wonderful political thriller. A sound plot and with solid characters throughout. An entertaining masterpiece. 8.5/10
