What did you watch on this icy, snowy, rainy, windy, sunny week? (15/04-21/04)

Only three movies for me and I started season 2 of Santa Clarita Diet.

Chocolat (2016 DVD): ‘’ The rise and fall of the famous clown Chocolat, the first black circus performer who revolutionised the stagnant circus acts and conquered Paris of the Belle Époque with his exuberance and originality. The unprecedented duo he forms with Footit is very popular, until easy money, gambling and discrimination take their toll on their friendship and Chocolat's career”. 7.5/10

ABCs Of Death 2 (2014 Neflix): ‘’ Another 26-chapter anthology that showcases death in all its vicious wonder and brutal beauty.’’ I never saw the first one but this was actually really good. Some sketches are funny and original, some are quite clever, some are weird as fuck, some are gore and some traumatizing. And some are all of the above, the letter Z for example. Overall: 6.5-7/10

The city of lost children (1995 DVD): ‘’ A scientist in a surrealist society kidnaps children to steal their dreams, hoping that they slow his aging process.’’ I had to watch this one on a laptop because it’s a region 2 DVD so I couldn’t savor all the flavours and there are many many in this fun Caro et Jeunet film. Cool story, good acting and superb cinematography. 7/10

There's something unsavory, underhanded, even snotty about Daniels I've never liked. Surprised he hasn't been typecast in kooky vagrant roles or that Terry Gilliam hasn't employed him yet.

ABCs of Death 2 5/10

Just two for me:

The Butterfly Murders (1979 Amazon Prime): "A journalist attempting to solve a mystery in "Martial World" enlists the aid of a master fighter and a woman named Green Breeze. They go to a mysterious castle where they come across poisonous butterflies and a black-leather-clad killer." Stars: Siu-Ming Lau, Michelle Yim, Shu Tong Wong, Kuo-Chu Chang 7/10

Silent Trigger (1996 Amazon Prime): "Waxman is a former Special Forces soldier who is now working as a heavily armed assassin for a top secret government agency. When a covert mission goes terribly wrong, Waxman and fellow assassin Clegg become that agency's prime targets." Stars: Dolph Lundgren, Gina Bellman, Conrad Dunn, Christopher Heyerdahl 7/10

Haven't seen yours bish

HAve you seen the first ABC? Is it better?

Do you remember some clips from the second one? Like the guy who does bath salt, of the girl pregnent for 13 years or the failed axe execution?

They were great.

reply

Yeah I saw the first one and I thought it was a little better. There is a ABCs of Death 2.5 that has 26 additional stories that didn’t make it into the second film. I have not seen it. I thought the idea was cool at first and there are certainly little stories here and there that work but in the end I believe they are just too short. I would rather have 3 or 4 stories told over the 2 hrs rather than 26 ultra short tales.

I watched quite a lot this week.

Galaxy Quest (1999, US)
Hilarious movie about a group of middle-aged actors whose only famous roles had been in a Star Trek-type series 20 years before. Now the only jobs they can get are promoting merchandise and going to conventions. One day they're offered seemingly another job reprising their roles to entertain their fans, but soon discover that actual aliens have seen their show, believe it's real and require their help to defeat an enemy in outer space who's trying to kill their people. The whole movie is extremely funny, kind of a satire about the Star Trek genre and its fans. I particularly enjoyed Alan Rickman's performance.

The Book of the Dead (2005, Japan)
A rather unusual stop-motion animated movie, set in the Nara period when Buddhism was first becoming established in Japan. A young noblewoman named Iratsume has set herself the task of making one thousand copies of a Buddhist sutra. She repeatedly sees a Buddha-like apparition in the mountains west of her home at sunset. After completing the thousandth sutra, she finds herself irresistably drawn there. Upon arriving, she finds a temple, and discovers that the apparition she's been seeing is the spirit of a nobleman who had been executed there generations before. He in turn believes her to be the last woman he saw before he died. Iratsume then tries to find a way to bring him peace. It's a very deep and slow-paced movie. It's barely an hour in length but feels twice as long. I don't mean that in a bad way. It's not a bad movie; it just really takes its time. I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure I fully understood it, as I'm not well-versed in Buddhism and it's a very Buddhist story. The only thing I actually disliked about the movie was that, though the character dialogue was in Japanese, the movie is narrated in English by a British woman, which makes no sense to me. It should have been entirely in Japanese. But other than that, I quite liked it.

Trumbo (2007, US)
Not to be confused with the 2015 movie of the same name, this is a documentary about the life of Hollywood screenwriter and sometime Communist Party member Dalton Trumbo, who was blacklisted during McCarthyism. I rented this because I wanted to learn more about the man, but after seeing it I felt like I understood him even less. The documentary seemed to actively avoid addressing his politics, which were the main thing I was interested in. I wanted to learn about his political thought, what it was they targeted him for. But there was nothing about that. It was a documentary about Trumbo the father and Trumbo the persecuted but talented writer. It was ok. But it wasn't what I was looking for and I can't say I liked it much.

Sophie's Choice (1982, US)
This is one of those movies that I'm reluctant to even try to describe because I don't think I can do so eloquently enough to do it justice and convey just how powerful a movie it is. It's a well-known enough movie anyway that it shouldn't need to be summarized. Meryl Streep plays Sophie, a Polish-born Holocaust survivor living in the US shortly after World War II. She has a stormy relationship with Nathan, her psychotic boyfriend who shifts rapidly and without warning from charming and sympathetic to violent and terrifying and back again. We see her through the eyes of Stingo, an aspiring novelist who rents a room just below theirs and befriends the couple. Over the course of the film Sophie reveals her tragic past in Poland before and during the fascist occupation. Streep did an amazing job of playing a Polish woman, was very convincing with the Polish accent and also spoke impeccable German. I don't particularly like Streep as a person, but I can't deny she is an incredibly talented actress and I think this was her at her very best. The only problem I had, and this isn't the movie's fault, is that I knew what the "choice" part was before seeing it. It was spoiled for me years ago in, of all things, an episode of King of Queens, an American sitcom. So I knew what it was when I started watching, and it was no shock to me. Although frankly, so much tragedy had already transpired in the movie that it probably would have felt like just part of the flow anyway. Either way, though, this was without a doubt a real masterpiece of a movie, one of the best I've ever seen.

To be continued.

Kline is simply stunning here. It's his finest hour. He is glorious.

"Stingo" drives it, keeping it dancing on the edge of the kilter. He's so wonderful. I can only imagine him getting that script and then going to work. Bless-his-heart.

The bridge where Kline toasts "Stingo" after (conducting) in front of a myriad of reflection of personality split is the penultimate scene to the singular where Nathan's long suffering brother opens their bedroom door (for us) and the denouement we knew was coming has arrived.

Continued:

Veronica (2017, Spain)
A teenage girl named Veronica, who lives in Madrid in 1991, decides to use a ouija board with her friend in school during a solar eclipse, hoping to contact her dead father. Instead she accidentally releases something powerful and evil into her life. She lives in an apartment with three little siblings whom she's responsible for while her mother works long hours in a restaurant. She struggles to protect herself and her little sisters and brother while the evil presence in their home terrorizes them more by the day. I thought this was quite a good horror movie. It seems to have near-universally low reviews, but I found it very creepy and effective. Supposedly it's based on a true story about a girl who died mysteriously after using a ouija board (hence the 1991 setting, as that's when the real event supposedly took place), though I haven't researched that.

The Invisible Guest [or, original Spanish title, "Contratiempo"] (2016, Spain)
A wealthy businessman named Adrian is charged with the murder of his mistress, whom he insists he did not kill. He meets a lawyer who draws the full story out of him, because as things are there's no way he's going to avoid a guilty verdict. He tells, through flashbacks, how he and his mistress were involved in a car accident in which the other driver whom they almost hit was killed. Fearing that their lives would be ruined by this, they panic and attempt to cover it up, hiding the body and car of the other driver. The father of the young man who died tracks down Adrian and his mistress and becomes obsessed with the fact that they must have been behind it. Adrian believes that the father killed his mistress and framed Adrian in such a way that Adrian would have to reveal his complicity in the death of the man's son in order to clear himself of his own mistress's death. This is really quite a compelling and well-thought-out mystery film.

We Are Not Alone (2016, Peru)
This is the first Peruvian movie I've seen. Unfortunately it was a rather disappointing one. A middle-class man with his little daughter and his new wife move into a house outside of Lima. The daughter and wife don't get along, as the wife isn't her mother, the real mother apparently having died. Odd things start happening in the house, and the wife and daughter soon come to the conclusion that it's haunted. The conclusion is reinforced when they discover a hidden basement that's been sealed off, and the discovery escalates the paranormal events. It's eventually discovered that a man murdered his wife and child in the house generations before. The idea isn't bad, but the movie goes through every single overdone trope this type of movie is plagued with, complete with false jump scares that turn out to be nothing every couple minutes. That got annoying fast. The actors weren't bad though. The little girl in particular did quite a good job I think. I think they all did the best they could. But the execution of the movie was sub-par. There was nothing original about it at all, and too many horror cliches. So overall it was mediocre. But not terrible.

That's it for movies. I've also begun watching the original House of Cards (1990, UK), and continued watching the Japanese animated series "Legend of the Galactic Heroes". Both of which are excellent, though I haven't finished them.

If not for Goldenthal's score (sort of bombastic yet also evocative and nails a good deal of what Batman is all about), that last one would probably be a 4/10 or lower. Parts of it feel unfinished. One mistake Schumacher made was relying on Goldenthal's good score in an attempt to paint over a weak script, even if the score itself does manage to retain my interest. His biggest was completely miscasting Clooney as Batman.

SubUrbia 9/10
One Flew 8.5/10
Batman and Robin 6.5-7/10

Movies:

-At Close Range (1986)
Interesting story, decent movie. But I thought the ridiculous finale brought the movie down. A real shame. Also, that Madonna song totally didn't fit the movie.

TV Shows:

-The Librarians - "And the Bleeding Crown"

-Midsomer Murders - "Destroying Angel" and "The Electric Vendetta"
Like I said, the first 3 seasons were my favourite and the episodes are getting a little sillier now. I've seen them already anyway, so I think I'm going to quite after season 4. I'm loving Troy's fabulous 90s ties, but he's got nothing on you, Stone!

-The Flying Doctors - "Do You Read Me?"

-Man About the House - "Come Fly with Me!"

-Family Matters - marathon
Urkel is getting more and more annoying with every season!

The Lucy Show -"Lucy and Viv Put in a Shower" and "Lucy Gets a Roommate"
The first is a black-and-white episode from the first season and much better than what I've seen up till now. The second episode is from season 5 and has Carol Burnett as a guest star. Not very good, but better than some of the other guest star episodes.

-Hotel - marathon

-Unsolved Mysteries - marathon

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

-Buffy The Vampire Slayer - "When She Was Bad", "Some Assembly Required" and "School Hard"
I'm loving season 2, but I'm hating the German voices of Spike and Drusilla. I just don't get dubbing!

I'm also watching a Dutch show from the 80s, but I guess it's no use reviewing that one.

It's a true story, so, you wonder how much license they were afforded to amend it.

{{{The song}}}Why not, Strat? I thought it was a fine match for the story told.

reply

It seems they were pretty faithful, although it's no biopic. They changed the names, so I allow them some artistic license, like Kiefer Sutherland's character not dying (although his role is so small, I don't know what the point of it was.) But you know what I didn't like about the finale.

As for the song, it's not necessarily that I dislike the song itself, but I don't think a 80s pop song fits the gritty atmosphere of rural life in Pennsylvania.

reply

Damn your eyes, Strat! If I have to hold you down and beat you into loving this movie AND song I'll get 'er done.

;)

reply

Come to my basement and I'll make you love St. Elmo's Fire, just like everyone else around here!😘

reply

You won't have to make me. I've loved it since it broke.

The way Wendy's mother whispers things. It's adorable. The inclusion of Balsam. Damn glad to see him there.

The way Lowe insults Wendy, but, that's the character. How could we expect him to behave any differently.

The way the hooker accosts McCarthy in the street. He's up to it.

Lowe, at zenith. Christ, he's almost beautiful there.

& the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVf4_WglzWA Everyone is accounted for in the clips and in the flesh and it makes you feel good to behold it. After Parr & Lowe have their moment you can see Lowe move back to Moore & they hug. I LOVE IT!!!

That song on a fine system will provide energy any time one cares to launch it.

I'm gonna give you a Monday afternoon Direct Hit for this, Strat. You big, beautiful St. Elmo's Fire lover, you!

reply

My favourite part is when Lowe tries to get frisky with Demi in the car. So hot!

That song is freaking great! It's my personal anthem! Who cares it's not gender appropriate!

reply

It is indeed, I brought it up & blasted it out just now. The horns comin' in. It's a real thrill, Strat.

Yep, you lodged that part in quote thread and I nailed it.

She's adorable there.

Did you ever see those 2 in "About Last Night...?" It's one of my wife & my favorites. I believe they were married at the time. Jim Belushi is a little overbearing in it, but, it's pretty good.

reply

I saw that one a long time ago. I think I've seen pretty much every Brat Pack movie, although most of them not more than once.

reply

I will have to watch this movie someday.

reply

Only in my basement, otherwise it's no fun!

reply

will you feed us if we show up ??

reply

Please, there'll be so much 🍶🍾🍷🍸🍹🍺🍻🥂🥃, you won't even think of food!

reply

I barely drink, what will I do there ???

reply

When I say you drink, you drink, Mitch!!! Otherwise, I'll get out my whip!

reply

Just don't force me to watch The Bold and Beautiful re-runs.

reply

If I can get my father to watch it, then I should have no problem with you!😈

reply

Don't torture the man like that.

reply

I promise you, when it's over we all will be happy!😘

reply

we all like happy endings. lol.

reply

Did you borrow my Mitch! expression or...?

reply

As if! I've been calling hownos Mitch for a very long time. I've never seen you call him or anybody else Mitch.😐

reply

Ok ok my bad.

I don't call him specifically, but even in me personal life I call people Mitches

reply

Aren't you confusing it with another word that starts with a "b"? Or is Mitch the male version?

reply

1. It's to insult them politely.
2. Its an inside joke from one of my old youtube vids.

reply

I've never seen it either, but Stratego has certainly piqued my curiosity. Must add it to my watch list.

reply

I don't know how I missed it back in 1985.

reply

I know why I did - raising my young children = no time for movies. 😐 I've missed a lot but that means I have plenty of things to catch up on. 😁

reply

I don't know how my girlfriend at the time missed it.

reply

It's a glorious movie, it's the one that brought Shogie and me together, the entire foundation of our friendship. The historical records can still be found somewhere on the boards of MC.

reply

I've seen some of your hysterical - oops, historical - conversations. What a hoot!

some older movies this week

Day of the Outlaw (1959) - An underrated western with Robert Ryan and Burl Ives. Outlaws take over a small town where ranchers and farmers who hate each other must work together. Also stars a young Tina Louise from Gilligan's Island. 7.5/10

Man of the West (1958) - A reformed outlaw becomes stranded after an aborted train robbery with two other passengers and is forced to rejoin his old outlaw band. Another underrated movie with Gary Cooper, Lee J Cobb and Jack Lord. Some think this was Cooper greatest performance. Solid all around. 7.5/10

Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) - Sergio Leone's greatest western starring Henry Fonda, Jason Robards and Charles Bronson. This has everything you would expect from Leone. Henry Fonda's last great role in my opinion. Robards as also great. 8.5/10

The Robe (1953) - In the Roman province of Judea during the 1st century, Roman tribune Marcellus Gallio is ordered to crucify Jesus of Nazareth but is tormented by his guilty conscience afterwards. Richard Burton was over the top as well as the guy who played Caligula. I thought the movie started well and then faded badly. 6.5/10

The New Centurions (1972) - An idealistic rookie cop joins the LAPD to make ends meet while finishing law school, and is indoctrinated by a seasoned veteran. As time goes on, he loses his ambitions and family as police work becomes his entire life. George C Scott is great as the grizzled veteran cop. Stacy Keach plays the rookie cop. The movie doesn't dig that deeply into the problems of the LAPD in 1972. Entertaining. 7/10.

reply

Please don't hang me on the public place but I found OUATITW rather boring. Long and not very entertaining for a young buck like me. (6.5/10)

i loved The good the BAd The ugly though. (8.5/10)

reply

I see your point on West. The scenes are long and the music is loud and there are way too many close ups. But the performances are spectacular imo.

reply

[The New Centurions (1972)]

Yes. Very intense treatment. Scott doesn't hog the scenes for once. And Miss Jane Alexander is gorgeous as always.

Long time ago, howie, but, I can remember sitting there like it was yesterday.
