"Long time no see" & "no can do" are apparently racist!

Apparently Chinese Americans used to talk in broken English and made these phrases. Americans used to use them and even threw on a chinese accent at first. The impersonations faded away but the phrases have stayed. I read that we shouldn't use them given the historic, racist mockery.

reply

That's why people get fired for saying "no can do" while their coworkers get away with saying "ching chong" all day.

"The mom in the car next to me just told me to stop texting. How rude! I wasn't texting, I was on Instagram. She needs to mind her business!!"

reply

This is news to me, sounds accurate but can you cite your source?

reply

I found some stuff on wikipedia and it looks like it could also have to do with Native American pidgin english as well

reply

Hmm, interesting.

reply

But I can't go for that, no (no) no can do
No, I can't go for that, no (no) no can do
I can't go for that, no (no) no can do

reply

Either that or maneater are my favorite Hall and Oates songs

reply

But they're racists, Pete!

reply

Wouldn't be the first time I disagreed with someone's views or words but liked their work

reply

Hey they are an extremely offensive band.
I heard Maneater was about Jeffrey Dahmer,I mean glorifying a serial killer tsk shame on them.

reply

I've been told that "long time no see" is literally translated from Chinese.

Which makes it cultural appropriation!!!! Run for the hills!!!

reply

I normally use this line when someone has been ignoring me and we meet up. "Hmm, long time no see, huh?"

reply

I feel like I get that as a dig from people who assume I've been ignoring them, but I'm just actually busy, and they're not the center of my world.

reply

Now that you mention it, I think it IS used quite often as a dig.

EVERYTHING is racist according to the idiots in the PC Police! Hopefully one of these days these moronic snowflakes will run out of things to be offended by.

😎

reply

Is this actually a thing... Is this particular PC issue being pursued in a meaningful way in the real world or at least in the media, or is it just some obscure cherry picked example of exagerrated PC behaviour so people can get all riled up about having their freedom of speach taken away?

Comedians being protested against by offended college students is a real thing, social media shaming campaigns are a real thing... But is this "Long Time No See" and "No Can Do" thing a real PC cause, or just an rare example to get enraged about or to write clickbait articles on?

I ask because I've never heard of this actually causing offence...

reply

Probably clickbait.

Language censors have got to stop being so niggardly with people's basic appreciation of being civil to each other.

I mean they are all the children of genocidal maniacs and so they should show some shame of their heritage and allow politeness.

reply

When they attempt to control the language, they're trying to CONTROL you.
