Movie Museum - Directors

I'm opening a movie museum.
I'm also on a budget.
I can only afford 4 pictures.
We need to pick the 4 directors that would best represent their craft.

My picks are

Kurosawa
Speilberg
Hitchcock
Wilder

What 4 movie directors should be the first ones on the wall?

reply

Speilberg-hes just a given
Gives everyone what they want and seals the deal perfectly
Master level

Refn-experimental, sometimes hard to follow but his films are vibrantly shot and stay with you for a long time
Im so glad i found Nicholas Winding Refn (AND what a funny/cool name huh?)

Sam Peckinpah-Boss

Tarantino-his movies have been too long of late and i get several of the frequent complaints about his stuff
But i love his work

reply

Good looking list.

I would say unique.

Tarantino was a tough one for me not to add.

reply

I had to google this Winding guy

reply

Hes amazing if you enjoy really oddball film making

Valhalla Rising
Only God Forgives
Pusher
Bronson
Drive (his greatest hit imo)
The Neon Demon

Hes not super popular but he is a genius...like all of those painters that had to die before they ever sold a painting

Refn is Van Gogh in 50 years
Mark those words my friend

reply

You need a bigger endowment, Dewey.

reply

I've never had a complaint about my endowment before.

From the number of replies of this thread you may be right.

reply

Brian De Palma , who was obviously influenced by Hitchcock.

Ethan and Joel Coen , who obviously kicked it up several notches.

reply

You know how painful it was for me to leave the Coen boys off my list.

reply

Why did you ?

reply

I was thinking more of the whole picture not necessarily my favorites.

I'm not sure they're quite royalty yet.

reply

Fine choices
Cant go wrong with either

reply

Yeah, I enjoyed Sam Peckinpah as well. And John Huston belongs in there also. Dewey is too limiting with just four choices.

reply

dewey has always had a limited endowment...just 4 indeed!

Stanley Kubrick
Alfred Hitchcock
Krzysztof Kieslowski
David Lynch

😎

reply

That's a nice list.

Would have been wonderful if Kieslowski could have made more movies.

reply

Thanks. He actually made quite a few, and I've seen most of them.
The best was the Dekalog (Ten Commandments) IMHO.

😎

reply

I've only seen maybe 6 or 7 of his films.
All were amazing.

I meant he died way too young.
Would love to have him still making films.

reply

Oh yes. He did die way too young. So sad. Kubrick died too young also.

😎

reply

Hard to argue with Hitchcock and Speilberg. I would add Robert Altman and John Huston.

reply

Huston is another one that cold easily be on the list along with John Ford.

reply

I liked Howard Hawks also.

reply

Couldn't go wrong with him either.

Elia Kazan is another one I almost added.
