American fast food.

I am from Canada and we don't have half the fast food options. I was in the States a couple years ago and REALLY loved the food I had at both Sonic and White Castle. So good. Way better then anything we have.

Just wondering what other people think?

What are the best fast food places?

reply

I think the better "fast" food joints tend to be more regional and the best tend to be local.

I'm not a fan of fast food at all but when we do have some, it will usually be a local Chinese restaurant or burger joint. There are a lot of really good independent burger/wings/BBQ/pizza places around here and none of them are national.

Of the franchises, I think Five Guys has a pretty good burger, but the fries (for which they provide you a metric shit load of even if you order a small order) are soggy and tasteless, although someone recently told me they have improved.

reply

5 guys fries have been very good recently

reply

Maybe it was you who told me!!

reply

Maybe so
Im always gabbing on...

reply

5 guys fries were excellent the one time I had them around October 2017.

reply

Five Guys will be coming to my hometown this year. So is it worth my money? It seems rather expensive. Not sure if the menu will be the same, but which of their items would you recommend? Their hot dogs seem interesting.

reply

Yeah, not cheap. Their standard or regular burger is a double burger and is what I assume to be two quarter pound patties, for a half pound total. Not completely sure on this but pretty sure.

So, if you order a single burger you can save a bit of money. The burgers are pretty good there and there's a ton of add-ons if you like all sorts of stuff on the burger.

They give you more fries than one can normally eat, and I'm not exaggerating. When my wife and I went, we would split a small fry and it was more than plenty, and I can eat fries.

I stopped going there because the fries sucked IMO, but others have said they're better now. I'll go back one more time and try. If the fries are better cooked, then I'll put it back on my short list of fast foods. If they're the same as I remember them, then it's off the list again.

Haven't tried a hot dog there as there are local two hot dog places in my vicinity that are nationally known for their hot dogs and relish, so I'll go there for a hot dog although I'm not the biggest fan of them.

Let us know what you think of the fries at 5 Guys when you go. My opinion is that they were soggy and flavorless, as if they weren't cooked nearly long enough. Others loved them but I think they were in love with the amount, not the quality.

reply

So the concept is that you can choose whatever kind of topping you like for free? Like Subway or something?

Not that many places here where you can get a hot dog, so I was curious.

Yeah, I did some Googling and it seems you're not the only one who dislikes their fries. Not sure if I want those, since there are many places here to get excellent fries (you know, the Belgian kind that we drown in mayonnaise).

reply

I kind of get the mayonnaise thing. I recently gave up on ketchup on fries (both the regular and the sweet 'tater fries) and am using Ranch dressing. But, Strat, my question to you is, and this is coming from a man who has loved hot dogs (and Conies [Short for Coney Island, a Long Island amusement park where this sausage originated]), a hot dog/Frankfurter is a sausage. Surely you must have access to other delicious sausages in a bun in your country. Knockworst? Bratwurst? You may feel a little let down by a hot dog, which I find less robust than other wursts. Re hot dog toppings: diced white onions, mustards of all sorts (I like stone-ground brown mustard, but that's just me), SAUERKRAUT, dill pickle slices, BBQ sauce. Enjoy the hell out of it, my dear. Also, ask to have the bun toasted. Life is too short. If we must eat, then let us DINE!

reply

There are big, delicious, juicy sausages in my country, arcane, but most of the time they don't come IN a bun. I know one place where they sell those hot dogs squeezed into a baguette, like some sort of condom. But I believe sausages should be free to breathe fresh air.

My dad actually has a hot dog maker, but I'm simply too lazy to borrow it, get all the ingredients at the supermarket and make it myself.

reply

strntz, I seem to recall that you have a home in Connecticut. If you ever find yourself near Everett MA, on the Commonwealth's North Shore, you might want to Google the menu for The Square Deli, which you will find on Foodler. It's a standalone "sandwich shop"--owned by a former chef from The Four Seasons Hotel in Boston. EVERYTHING is homemade, including the potato chips and the soups/stews/chilis. Everything is made to order. Is it as fast as the chain stores? No. Is it fast enough? Yes. Is it good enough? No. It's not. It's better.

It is 'WAY better.

reply

I do live in CT and will make note of that deli. My brother is a Red Sox fan and we usually make a car trip north several times a summer. Thanks.

reply

Isn't Everett where the Casino is going? It will be a great thing for the region. I'm a little north of the area.

reply

It is, and it's driving up property values, for sure. Steve Wynn is buying up all the land around the resort, and paying top dollar. The construction workforce totals 4,000 workers, and the resort will provide 4,000 permanent jobs for the region. Projected total cost for the project is $2 billion.

And, in fact, the Wynn folks have The Square Deli cater every one of their events, that's how good it is. Steve Wynn only goes first class!

reply

Just burger talk:

Wendy's is great
5 Guys is better!
Burger King isnt bad either
And most clean diners can serve up a good burger too!

Burgers...my death row choice!

reply

Let's face it: it's hard to fuck up a burger; but Brazillian burgers, like Brazilian pizzas, puzzle and scare me. In both cases, the Brazilians just keep piling stuff on. I like toppings and seasonings, but do you really want bacon AND ham AND a chicken cutlet AND corn AND cream cheese AND mayonnaise on your hamburger? Forget about taste. Forget about having the thing collapse into your crotch. How do you get your mouth open wide enough to eat it?

PS Did you know that the Hamburger (with onions) was invented in Germany as a cure for a sore throat? I am just overflowing with superfluous information.

Yummy, albeit superfluous, information.

reply

That doesnt sound very good
Get your shit together Brazil

Did not know about the sore throat factoid
How was that supposed to help??

Your information is always welcome R_Kane

reply

Whoa, whoa, whoa there cowboy.

I know a very special Brazilian who's very special that's not a big fan of yours right now.
I'm sure it's all out of context.

reply

Sorry hombre-
I have no doubt that you know special people as you are obviously special too😀
But corn and cream cheese on a burger!?!
I belive the Geneva Conventions covered this sort of heinous behavior and ruled it uncool years ago
Brazil: great butts!
Yucky burgers...

reply

I'm about special as they get. You know this.

For as much as GF appreciates the butt comment , and she does, mostly cuz it's true, and has
a big smile on her face, she's still not impressed with telling Brazil to get it's shit together.

Don't knock it till you try it.

reply

apologies to the GF from Brazil

Seems i struck a nerve:(

Entirely unintended

Lets get back to making funnies Friendo!

reply

No nerves.
She thinks you're a hoot.
I of course told her the truth. :)

Most of the time she just rolls her eyes and shakes her head.

Seriously, she wanted me to just mess with you.
What am I going to do?
I think she might hit harder than you do.

reply

You sound whipped buddy

That can be fun once in a while

Salud

reply

No, it's fun most of the time.
Maybe you're doing it wrong.

reply

I do everything wrong

Makes it all rather exciting!

Was this thread about fast food...i think we took a left turn at Albuquerque

Say 'Hey' to your girl for me...shes gonna smile and youll wonder why

reply

If you did it wrong then maybe you read my book.
How To Be Wrong Without Really Trying.

If you took a wrong turn then I probably shouldn't have followed.
I will however name him George, and I will hug him and pet him and squeeze him...
and pat him and pet him .
Maybe the wrong thread for this too?

She's always wondering why I'm smiling.
Most of the time it's cuz I'm thinking bout you. 😉

reply

Of course i read your book
Im in Oprahs book club
It was brilliant

Nice!
And im pretty sure its always the right thread for anything here😉

Just joking around❤️
Tell your sexy gal im taking her man!

reply

Brilliant .... No.
It was pretty damn good though, wasn't it.
Prez O. isn't too bad. She's a good kid.

She already knows she has NO chance when you're involved.

reply

I've got a Burger King just a few blocks down the street. In the spring through fall, I get frequent wafts of sensual aroma in the early evening hours while lounging on my porch. Wonderful simple pleasure !

reply

I miss Burger King so much,I'm no longer anywhere near one.

reply

Five Guys Burgers and Fries.

😎

reply

Shake Shack and In-n-Out Burger

reply

I dont think we have either of those here
Needless to say im not happy anout it

reply

No In-n-out Burger, but Shake Shake was founded in NYC and has several locations there and at least one in Yonkers in the Cross County Mall.

reply

Wow!
Had no idea
Cross County Mall... Been a long time since ive seen it
Rough crowd lol
Thanks as always Tex!

reply

The best fast food places are fruit stands.

Life is a hike. Pack.

reply

5 guys is good. We have several of those as well. I love the bag full of fries and free peanuts and that you get to add lemon wedges to your drink.

For my money the whopper is great and Wendy's both the spicy chicken ranch sandwich and big bacon classic are awesome.

I like the slider idea though. I need a good slider place up in here

reply

I’m Canadian as well. My brother and I have been contemplating doing a U.S fast food road trip for a while now.

reply

Where about's in Canada? That is funny, cause me and a buddy have been contemplating such a trip for years

reply

Calgary. You?

reply

Calgary as well. Live downtown. What do you think the best fast food/burger in town is?

reply

Cool. I live just south of downtown in Bankview, I’m on 17th ave a lot, so
Clive burger is my go to.
Boogie’s is pretty good.
I’m always hearing about how good 320 is, but haven’t gotten around to trying it.

reply

Boogies is awesome. Love their pizza burger.
Most places on 17th are good. The Ship has good late night food, as does the Watchmans.
Also never been to 320.

I thought Clive was just ok. Nothing really set it apart

reply

I love that Boogies has a Marda loop location now so I can walk there.
I agree about the Ship, very good pub burger.
Watchmans is alright.
I’m a pretty big MMA fan, I tend to go to either Watchmans or the Pint to watch UFC.

reply

I love MMA. I can never find a place that is not absolutely packed for UFC. I had to pony up the 100 bucks for the Floyd vs Conner fight cause I couldn't find anywhere to watch it. How is watchmans for UFC?

Also you want an awesome burger try Niana's kitchen on the other side of 17 (close to the casino) but go hungry

reply

I tried Naina’s at their old location near Crossroads market. It was good, but it was a really hot day and I was too hung over to enjoy it. Haven’t been to their new spot.
Watchmans is pretty great for UFC actually. The bartender/manager is a fan, so everyone gets pretty into it.
I often go to the Pint because it’s closer to mine and my friends places. Plus, the head bouncer is UFC vet Nick Ring!

reply

Naina's is awesome. The food is cooked by the owner herself. Super sweet lady. Even the half order of poutine takes hours to eat.

Maybe i will check out Watchmans on Saturday for the Stipe fight. I usually go to the Kingshead but that requires a train trip.

Not sure who Nick Ring is. I really got into UFC when Brock went over there (I was a huge WWE fan back then) but fell in love with it then. I don't watch all the events (I am a Flames, NY Giants, Blue Jays fan) but I follow the bigger events

reply

I may end up there Saturday too. Should be a good day. Flames v Jets in the afternoon and two title fights in the evening.

reply

I’m actually going to the flames game. Go for 8!

reply

Yeah man. Go Flames go.

reply

Are there any good Burger Barons left in Calgary?

reply

No. I think the nearest one is in Red Deer.

reply

Edmonton still has one good one left and I think there was one in Thorsby that still has good burgers. I prefer supporting local when it's good.

reply

There is one in calgary
