What did you watch on this faithful final week of 2017? Dada daaaaam!

Yep, here we are gang. The last post of the 2017 edition of this thread. Congrats to all the survivors and I wish to thank you all for coming back every week. I hope we will keep this going for 2018 and hopefully more people will join in. Now let'S take that bottle and make it POP!

My final week of 2017:

Pottersville (2017 Netfilx) : ‘’ Maynard (Shannon), a beloved local businessman is mistaken for the legendary Bigfoot while on an inebriated romp through town in a makeshift gorilla costume during the Christmas season. The sightings set off an international Bigfoot media spectacle and a windfall of tourism dollars for a simple American town hit by hard times.” A very strange movie that was. The script/story was unfortunately too weak, even my man Michael Shannon could not lift this up over the “mediocre” bar. I would call this an interesting failure. 5/10

Le diner de con (1998 TV):” To amuse themselves at a weekly dinner, a few well-heeled folk each bring a dimwit along who is to talk about his pastime. Each member seeks to introduce a champion dumbbell. Pierre, an avid participant of the game, runs into one problem after another that devilishly compromises his secrets, turning the tables on him and his objective, which diverges as the movie progresses.” This is one of my favorite French comedies. It’s simple, funny and effective plus some great acting make this a thumbs up in my book. 8/10

Bright (2017 Netflix): Orcs, Elves, thugs, FBI, Will Smith and a magic wand. There is the recipe for a unique mess of a movie. Actually it’s not really a mess, it’s just that with its unique approach, it somehow manages to remain an average buddy cop movie that fails to distinguish itself from the mass. High note: Cool action scenes. Low note: Failed attempt at humour. 5.5-6/10

Friday after next (2002 DVD): ‘’ Craig and Day Day have finally moved out of their parent’s houses and into their own crib. The cousins work nights at a local mall as security guards. When their house is robbed on Christmas Eve they team up to track him down.’’ This is one of my favorite Christmas movies. What? I thought we could be honest with each other. I just enjoy this shizzle out of this franchise. Well actually, Friday is my fav comedy ever with 10/10, and then we got Next Friday with Mike Epps stepping on my nerves a bit too much for me to enjoy it properly, with 6/10. And finally, 7/10 for Friday after Next

The Hero (2017)... Small movie carried by Sam Elliot, but carried well...

Crooked House (2017)... Good Agatha Christie adaptation... Fun murder mystery...

The Limey (1999)... Great "revenge" movie, that is about more than just revenge... Better than Tarantino's revenge movies like Django and Inglorious Basterds... Shot beautifully and edited in an avant gaurd way, but one that draws you into the film rather than distracting you from it...

Planet of the apes trilogy, lone survivor and captain Phillips

Lone Survivor was amazing...terrifying and thought provoking, due to that one scene in particular...'what would i do..?'
A girl i knew grew up with Michael Murphey and said he was popular, bright and very kind
She wasnt surprised that he made the choice he did...he was a very decent person in her words

I havn't seen any of yours but I am going to check out Bright at some point.

Karate Kill (2016 Amazon Prime): "When a mysterious loner and Karate master Kenji's little sister goes missing in Los Angeles, whoever stands in his way of finding her will face the wrath of a lethal KARATE KILL!" This is another modern day homage to 80s violent action flicks, however unlike a lot of these homages this film has little humor besides one of the big bads of the film which may be humorous to some. Its plays pretty straight and is at times very violent. The writing could have been better, and the primary bad guy is a very weak part of the film. Still I enjoyed it. 6/10

A Slit-Mouthed Woman (2007 Shudder): "A suburban town in Japan is the victim of what is supposedly just an urban legend, a woman's spirit with a horribly disfigured face who is intent on kidnapping children for unknown reasons." This was leaning towards a lower score for me, but once it was finally over I realized i enjoyed the overall film. Some of the unrestrained violence against children can be hard to watch. 6/10

StageFright (1987 Amazon Prime): "A group of stage actors lock themselves in the theater for a rehearsal of their upcoming musical production, unaware that an escaped psychopath has sneaked into the theater with them." A pretty straight forward Italian serial killer movie. Some of the deaths are creative and the film kept me entertained all the way through. 7/10

The Accountant (2016 Netflix DVD): "As a math savant uncooks the books for a new client, the Treasury Department closes in on his activities, and the body count starts to rise." With Ben Affleck you never know if you are going to get good or bad. This film i think was very good, he does a good job, the action is solid all throughout. My only gripe is the ending is a bit anticlimactic. 8/10

Beyond the Darkness (1979 Shudder): "Grief-struck after the death of his wife, a young man attempts to keep her with him forever - by gutting her, stuffing her and replacing her eyes with glass eyes, turning her into a doll. But his bouts of insanity are just beginning" Part of this film I am sure was pretty shocking when it first debut back in 1979, even today if you keep your expectation for the effects within reason its pretty gory in spots. The story itself is ok, solid Italian horror. 6/10

A Tale of Two Sisters (2003 Shudder): "This supernatural horror film from Kim Jee-woon is inspired by the ancient Korean folktale "Jangha and Hongryun." Set in an isolated lakeside house, it begins with two young girls, Su-mi (Im Su-jung) and Su-yeon (Mun Geun-yeong), returning home after a period of hospitalization following the death of their mother. In the meantime, their father Mu-Hyun (Kim Gab-su) has married Eun-joo (Yeom Jeong-ah), whom the girls obviously despise. Strange, violent visions begin to disturb Su-mi and she becomes convinced that Eun-joo is keeping a dark secret from the family." This is the film The Uninvited (2009) is based off, however this film overall is the superior film. From the acting, writing, to the overall atmosphere of the film is great. While if you pay attention it will give away its primary secret early on it doesn't diminish the film at all. 8/10

The World of Kanako (2014 Tubi TV): "As former detective Akikazu searches for his missing daughter, Kanako, he soon learns she has a mysterious secret life." His daughters life is quite the learning experience. This is the kind of film for me you just keep watching even though its very unpleasant. All the primary characters here are bad people, most of the secondary characters are bad people. There is no joy or happiness to be found in this film. This is no average parent looks for lost child finds redemption tale. In fact what motivates the father to find her is disturbing. 7/10

I enjoyed Tale of two sisters but expected it to leave a bigger print in my mind. It was just good. 7/10

Hey Stone,

It seems appropriate that your weekly, ongoing thread would culminate on New Year's Eve. My contributions are:

Chaplin ( 1992) -- interesting and entertaining biopic of the legendary comedian. I learned a lot about the man from this movie. A stellar performance by Robert Downey Jr., I thought. 7.6/10

The Man Who Wasn't There ( 2001 ) -- a melancholy, maybe even grim, darkly humored neo-noir that embodies all that we've come to know and enjoy about a Coen brothers film. A great cast with a superb performance by Billy Bob Thornton as a laconic loser. His features are strikingly aesthetic in B&W and convey so much. 7.6/10

Happy New Year, bud ! Looking forward to another year of great movie sharing with you.

Another underrated movie. Man Who Wasn't There.
Most people put this at the bottom of the Coen movies I put it much higher.

I basically just went along with the IMDb ratings on both movies. They seemed fair. So, do you think 7.6 is underrated ? I've got to admit, I was surprised to see it missing on several lists of their movies I looked at.

I think the rating is fair by the people who have seen it.
It seems like a lot of people haven't seen it.

I meant more of what you said about it being missing on the lists.
It's not their best but should be included in any list.
Nobody ever mentions it when they talk about the Coens.

Yeah, it really caught me by surprise when I discovered that it was one of theirs in the end credits but then it also made perfect sense because it had their style stamped all over it.

TMWWT: I bought it a few months ago, one of the few Coen movies Im yet to see.
