Jim Carrey nabbed the role of the Grinch after making it through an audition process that included earning the approval of Dr. Seuss' widow, but those obstacles were minor compared with what he faced on the set. He had a particularly hard time in the makeup chair, where he spent hours a day during the lengthy shoot—and had to be fitted with uncomfortable contact lenses that proved so painful that the studio brought in a military torture adviser to help Carrey cope. Those techniques got him through filming without quitting, but just barely; in fact, some shots of the Grinch's eyes had to be digitally fixed in post-production because Carrey couldn't bear to wear the contacts.

Military torture advisor? I never knew there was such a thing. So how does that work- anyone know?

reply

I have some ideas....it's complicated to say in words.

reply

I wonder if one of the techniques involves trying to think of happy things while you're experiencing incredible pain and discomfort?

reply

It's one of them,yes....but it's not that easy as it seems.

reply

Hmm. Or perhaps the advisor told Jim Carey encouraging words like "You got this man! You can do it. I know you can do it, one more hour left until it's over. You're gonna make it. It's not so bad....no pain, no gain!"

reply

From what I remember one of the things that he told Carrey was to smoke a lot. I don't know what that does, but there you go.

Probably also to occupy your mind with something so you don't go crazy. I'm no expert, but I'd guess resisting torture has more to do with your mind state, than how much physical pain you can take.

reply

Smoke a lot? Like smoke a joint while sitting in the makeup chair? Lol

reply

No, smoke cigarettes.

I actually remembered where I heard this story. It's a short clip, but it gives a little info:

Perfect! I loved the way he told the story. Thanks so much for sharing that video. So now I know. The process of getting into character isn't easy. Lol

reply

Maybe...but in reality he couldn't endure a military torture.

reply

what a mess this is. this is sick.

reply

Carey could have used the experience as a form of method acting and channeled that negative energy he felt into his performance by making the Grinch appear even more of a miserable creature.
