What did you watch last week fellow? (10-15/10-21)

Whooot whooot, here we are again, let's do this!

My week:

Terminator : Salvation (DVD 2009) : ‘’ In 2018, a mysterious new weapon in the war against the machines, half-human and half-machine, comes to John Connor on the eve of a resistance attack on Skynet. But whose side is he on, and can he be trusted?’’
I found the acting to be mediocre but overall it’s an OK action movie. 6/10

Grand theft Parsons (2003 DVD):’’ When legendary singer Gram Parsons dies, Kaufman (Johnny Knoxville) steals the body to keep a promise he made as his friend and agent. A chased ensues in this desert adventure based on a true story.’’
It was well made enough to be enjoyed mildly but what really made this a memorable watch was Michael Shannon’s presence on screen as the hippie. 6.5/10

Middle Man (2016 Netflix):’’ Lenny Freeman's dream of being a famous comedian is about to become a nightmare. Not only is he stuck in a dead end accounting job, Lenny has a bigger problem -- Lenny is not funny. When his mother suddenly dies, he quits his job and heads to Vegas in search of fame. But along the way, a mysterious hitchhiker lures him into a desert-town killing spree with dark and twisted results - as the bodies pile up, Lenny becomes funnier and funnier.’’
There were some really good moments here and there but overall it felt a bit cheap and predictable. 5.5/10

Iceman (Bing feng: Chong sheng zhi men 2014 Netflix): ‘’An imperial guard and his three traitorous childhood friends ordered to hunt him down get accidentally buried and kept frozen in time. 400 years later passes and they are defrosted continuing the battle they left behind.’’
Interesting concept, the action and the humour was well balanced and the effects were acceptable. I didn’t enjoy Donnie Yen’s performance though and he’s the main character. The story was all over the pace too. 5.5-6/10

The Babysitter (2017 Netflix): ‘’ The events of one evening take an unexpected turn for the worst for a young boy trying to spy on his babysitter.’’
It’s my second McG movie this week. It was easy to enjoy but it lacked the creativity to really make it outstanding. It’s more of a comedy than horror and the humour was not always on point. Good acting and fun gore. 6.5/10

Another rewatch for me, the very erotic ( thanks to the sensual beauty of both Sanaa Lathan and Eva Mendes ) and fast-paced as well as fun crime/thriller, Out of Time : https://moviechat.org/tt0313443/Out-of-Time 7/10

reply

I liked Out of Time too.
Not a classic by any means but still good.

When you say Eva Mendes you always have my attention.

reply

I forgot, I also rewatched this which just might be considered a classic : https://moviechat.org/tt0061770/Hombre

An interesting character study which seems to address the " nature vs. nurture " argument. Paul Newman's appears to be the most clean-cut yet he has an inner savage who has admittedly " eaten dog " during a time of extreme hunger. His piercing, icy, blue eyes emphasize his likewise cold, detached, alpha-male demeanor throughout the film. I both wonder and acknowledge how he was cast in that role.

reply

Hombre was good - I should watch it again

reply

I haven't seen that one in years.

I do remember liking it very much.

reply

Out of time: I know I saw it back then but barely remember.
Haven't seen Hombre.

One for me this week

Two For the Road-1967-Audrey Hepburn, Albert Finney. About a married couple and their
problems. This is a more realistic movie about marriage than the usual stuff. Especially considering
the time of the movie. I wasn't in a good place when I watched this so I gave it a 6.
I think it's much better than that.

Finished People of Earth
Started season 2 of Channel Zero. So far it's really good

I've seen none of yours SK.
From your reviews I probably won't.

reply

yeah, Two for the road isn't something I'd watch neither. I wish you a good week, hope things will get better.

The Kid (1921, US)
One of Charlie Chaplin's movies. I've only seen a few so far but I love them, and this is no exception. In this one, an unwed mother abandons her baby in a car outside a rich person's home, with a note asking them to care for him. The car is stolen by two crooks, who in turn abandon the baby in an alley when they discover it. Chaplin's famous tramp wanders by and finds the kid, and after trying unsuccessfully to find someone else to take him, he decides to raise him as his own. As the years go by and the baby becomes a little boy, he becomes a partner in the tramp's humorous misadventures. The tramp has grown attached to him, and struggles to keep him when the authorities discover that he's an orphan. Wonderful movie.

Black Rose Mansion (1969, Japan)
This is a bit of an unusual film. A wealthy man named Kyohei owns an exclusive gentlemen's club called the Black Rose Mansion, which frequented by a cross-section of Japan's elite. He hires a mysterious woman named Ryuko to sing regularly in the club, unaware of the tumult that she brings with her wherever she goes. Shortly after her arrival, a series of obsessive ex-lovers turn up to seek her out and win her back, willing to kill or die for her. Kyohei himself eventually falls for her and wins her over, and things settle down for a time. But then his wayward son, Wataru, becomes obsessed with her as well, and is willing to do anything to obtain her. It's a pretty good movie, but the unusual thing is that Ryuko, the woman whom every man in the movie is obsessed with, was played by a male actor. I'm not really sure what the director was aiming at with that, but historically men played female roles in Japanese kabuki theater when women were banned from it under the Tokugawa Shogunate. In that sense, this movie could be regarded as a sort of modern-day kabuki play. Westerners unfamiliar with Japanese culture might find it unrelatable or off-putting, but I enjoyed the movie myself.

My dad is a fan of Chaplin. Because of that I saw some of his stuff but I did not know the story of The kid. It's very interesting.

I'll check if I have 1922 on Netflix.

Boys in trees: Spoiler! This will be in next week's thread as I just watched it but I can tell you that I enjoyed it although I wouldn't call it an horror. I actually found it moving too, what with the finale. That hug made me tear up, I admit it.

A quiet week for me - too much sports again.

Jungle (2017) - A pretty good man vs nature movie starring Daniel Radcliffe. Based on a true story from 1981 following an Israeli man who travels to the Bolivian jungle and gets lost. 7/10

1922 (2017) - Subtitles are needed to deal with the mumbling but overall a pretty entertaining thriller/horror. 7/10

The Ox-bow Incident (1943) - One of my all time favorites with messages that are relevant today. 9/10

11:14 (2003) - an entertaining dark comedy told in five different segments in non linear fashion. A pretty good story line with some twists and plenty of humor. 7/10

reply

11:14 looks quite good.
1922 also looks interesting.
First time I hear of The Ox-bow Incident.

Terminator: Salvation. Did not finish it! What I did watch from it wasn't that interesting. But Avatar dude sure acts like a robot. And didn't Christian Bale go all "Terminator" on that poor man on this shoot?

Mostly rewatches while vegging infront of the TV for me this week.

Dawn of the Dead (2004)
It's the end of the world as we know it, and every one has the marksmanship of a professional sniper. Also, if you take out all the social criticism of the original, why are all the zombies going to The Mall? Are they fans of Robin Sparkles*? This movie is a lot dumber than I remember! And I feel like there was a greater film in there, if only it wasn't directed by Zack Snyder. I wish James Gunn not only wrote, but also directed this. The fat lady and the pregnant zombie were ridiculous enough that they should've been more comedic than what they were. It had it's moments of tension though, I'll give it that.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
Olive has won the chanse to go to the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant (yes, one of those weird American things, where little girls are made to look like adult women). So the whole family hops in the van and heads to... there. Some mishaps happen along the way. But they are Winners, damn it, and they're not going to give up until little Olive is on that stage. And when she finaly gets on there, everyone is shocked! Shoked I tell you! (Oh the hypocrisy). Ok, this review is a mess, but I love this film. It's heartfelt, it makes me laugh, it makes me cry. Little Abigail Breslin is adorable. The performances are great. I like the story, I like the message. Again, I love this film.

Mindhunter (2017)
Just two good guys (and a lady) going around interviewing serial killers (not the lady), helping the cops, and creating profiling, basically. Except the good guys aren't all good (in a real people kind of way). Fincher doing Fincher things. It started a little shaky for me, but by the end I was all on board. The structure took some time to get used to, but I liked it by the end (yes, I'm repeating myself). Same with some of the characters. Interesting show, lots of talking (the engaging kind). Just, yeah, I liked it. It's good.

P.S. Maybe I should do these when I'm not this tired lol.

reply

'' And didn't Christian Bale go all "Terminator" on that poor man on this shoot?'' Not sure what you mean by that honey.
''Fincher doing Fincher things.'' What does that mean?

Dawn of the dead: Watched it a few weeks ago. Gave it 6.5.

Thansk Mina, you made me smile once more.

reply

It _was_ on that set. Enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AauouZYgOUs

I don't know what ''Fincher doing Fincher things.'' means either. His general way of directing...? I wasn't "all there" when I wrote these this week lol.

reply

oooooh! I didn't know David was involved in all this.

Oh, David, David, DAaaaaaviid.

Sorry, Im never quite '' All there'', like ever....

(can't check the link form work so I'll see it later, aiight homegirl?)

reply

Yes, David. Fincher. I should've clarified maybe? lol

Your work is really getting in the way of our movie chatting lately, SK!
