Iconic for me would be The Wild Wild West from the 1960's. Most beloved for me would be Star Trek TOS even though it was not the first with narration.

Now you sort of poked a hole in my iconic choice. Both shows used animation with a musical score. I still prefer WWW but now it seems less iconic. Maybe All in the Family with Archie and Edith sitting at the piano.

I love the opening credits of Beverly Hills 90210! Or Dallas and Dynasty. Theme songs were especially great in the 80s and 90s. Cartoon theme songs from those decades are among my favourites, like Transformers or Jem. And how about all those sitcoms? Perfect Strangers is not one of my favourite shows, but what a great song that is. It was basically the reason I watched it!

Twilight Zone had one great spooky opening. Alfred Hitchcock's theme sends a shiver down the spine too.
The original Outer Limits had a great opening and a beautiful theme song.
For me, the greatest and most kicka@@ opening theme song and credits was Hawaii Five-O!!! Nothing better.
I second the original Outer Limits -- I had that whole narration down, and used to say it alongside the guy!

Do you think it's because the songs were better back then or is it because
we watched those shows so often?
I haven't seen those shows in over 30 years but still know all the words to those songs.
A little of both. Those shows were like comfort food for the mind and the songs were the signatures. We could be in another room doing something else and when such a show came on our ears perked up and we went into the room where the television was. Also, the songs tended to be upbeat for the most part. But even then there were theme music that were depressing such as with MASH. Then with All in the Family you have a theme that sort of mocks the notion of being in a comfort zone versus seeing what is going on around you.
