How soon is too soon for holiday decorations to appear in stores?

It was I believe August and I saw Halloween stuff. Wayy to soon imo. Sept, is back to school. Halloween is the last day in Oct. It would be ok if all Halloween merch was constrained to the month of October.

It's Sept now and I just saw Christmas items. THREE holidays ahead. Back to school, Halloween, Thanksgiving.

I think that when one holiday ends you can start with the next. No skipping holidays please. No selling Easter shizz in JANUARY! New year, V-day, Patty's Day, Easter, Mother's day, Father's day, Independence day, Back to school, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas. How hard is it for stores to understand?

They are already selling winter stuff. Which means no more summer stuff, or fall. The season we are currently in. Confusing. So, how far in advance do you expect people to shop? Do you really expect people to buy a Christmas tree in September!? LOL Really though? So no one will buy anything, and then not only the store will suffer = no profits and a glut of seasonal stuff. But we can't but the stuff we NEED. Ugh!

I love Christmas, best time of the year, they can't start it too soon for me, it's a happy time, families get together, share gifts to one another, we cook for days, we plan for weeks, so many Christmas parties, office, friends, etc., Christmas eve for the Italians is a fish feast, all kinds of fish dishes, sooooo delicious,
Thanksgiving is just like Christmas (without the gifts) time for family gatherings, we start setting up for Christmas right after Thanksgiving, love the holidays, BRING THEM ON,

reply

It's not "a happy time" for universally everyone. Did you know that the highest suicide figures occur at Christmas?

Many people find it very depressing, for complex reasons.

reply

I realize that it's not a happy time for everyone, and the suicide figs are off the charts, but that's not going to ruin my holidays, however, every year my company donates $2,000.00 in food (turkeys included) to the church for the people that might not otherwise afford to buy for Thanksgiving, and we do the same at Christmas time, my truck pulls up to the lower part of the church the eve of the holiday and there's always a line of people waiting, that's one of the best part of the holidays for us,

reply

I never said it ought to ruin YOUR holidays.

I just pointed out that your statement of what a happy time it is happens to be subjective to you -- and of course many people. But it's still subjective and not a universal experience.

It's great that you help out the less fortunate and that this gives you joy, that is truly wonderful. There can never be enough of that.

It's just that for some of us it's not "bring them on." It can be an emotionally difficult time not just financially.

reply

"It's just that for some of "us" it's not "bring them on." It can be an emotionally difficult time not just financially"

I assume when you say "US" you are one of the many that struggle with the Christmas holidays, I'm sorry for that,
My brother lost his young wife just days before Christmas, now he chooses to sit by himself in his home, I visit him,
he has no financial problems and smiles and jokes on the outside when I'm there but inside he is an emotional train wreck, and there's nothing anyone can do to help him. I told you about him b/c I want you to know that I know what it's like to have emotional difficulties during these times.
you take care Prelude,

reply

Thank you yawkee -- that's so very kind of you! I'm so sorry about your brother, too. That is tragic; I'm sure he will not find it easy to disassociate Christmastime with that sad loss.

Thank you for your caring post. You take care too. :)

reply

Thanks Prelude, I'm good, as long as I stay out of trouble, lol

reply

God ...sorry
You sound like real good folks
Thoughts are with you dude...tear in my eye!

reply

Thats really nice
Heartwarming good stuff:)
Much respect Yawkee

reply

Thank you for that shogun, This year we are adding an additional $1000.00 for toys along with the food, something I should have been doing all along,
but the only thing we Italians think of is food, lol

reply

yawkee, I am with you..... these days.
I use to get stressed out. I don't do that any longer. My gift list is cut down to people I truly care about..... not the ones I feel obligated to buy for.
I may be one of those disgusting people that everyone hates.... I buy presents throughout the year when I see something I just KNOW that someone I love will like.
By the time the holidays roll around, I'm happy to enjoy decorating, baking, and BEST OF ALL, holiday movies. [SMILE]
I can certainly understand depression during the holidays. The best thing to do is to avoid all of that foolishness! Skip the family! Surround yourself with people who matter. If you have nobody, hang out with others who have nobody. Thanksgiving is a great way to make those acquaintances by serving food to those who have nobody.
All I know is that when I feel bad, I find others who have bigger problems than me. This may sound silly, but if you get involved and can help others, your own problems seem small after a while. Sometimes, just helping others can cheer you up and make you realize that your own problems are petty. You may even free your mind and discover a solution to your own problems when you help others.
These are the things I think about during the holidays....... BRING THEM ON!
I wish that more people understood this.

I don't know.... I have gotten use to the stores getting ahead of the times. If they want to sell Christmas Crap in July, I'm ok with it as long as the prices are cut by 75% two weeks before Christmas!

It isn't just the holidays! I see swimsuits in February. I see winter coats in July!

reply

MissMargoChanning, you are definitely not one of the disgusting people, many people in my own family buy gifts anytime when they see them for someone else, it's serendipity when your out shopping for shoes and you see something that your son or daughter or uncle would like, so you buy it,
there is a huge store right off the highway where I live called "The Christmas Tree Shop" it's Christmas 365 days a year in that store, I love it and so do many other people b/c it's always packed with people, you can do your entire Christmas shopping b/c they have everything,
I once bought a $250.00 winter coat in April at the Gap for $25.00, warmest coat I own, but I had to wait 7 months to wear it, lol.
I know I'm early but, happy holidays.

My nearest large supermarket has its Christmas stuff on shelves BEFORE the Halloween stuff, and it annoys the shit out of me!

Right after they clear out the summer stuff, the Christmas stuff appears. There are so many ways I want to tell this store they are fucked-up (I also have other complaints).

They also put out the Easter stuff before the Valentine's stuff.

LOL! Hate those smug bastards! :p

reply

In my part of the country,the...hollyday...stuff appear about two months before the season.I went yesterday to store and the...christmas decorations were already for sale...damn,this people are desperate for profit...

reply

At this rate, the next thing we'll be seeing is the Easter stuff right before New Year's Eve!

reply

Nothing surprises me anymore...πŸ˜‰

One of the best ideas I've heard in a long time is, we should go to a Olympic schedule for Christmas, celebrate it only once every four years. Can you just imagine the jubilation?! As it is, you suffer from near year round Christmas fatigue. Of course our retail overlords would never allow it. Blech!

reply

[deleted]

If you work in retail, you get to see humanity at its worst during Christmas. I am, among other things, Christian. I gladly embrace Jesus as my Lord and Savior. You need not share my faith, and I completely respect that. Blessed be. To me, Christmas means, among other things, "peace on Earth, goodwill to humankind." In our society, too often it means "Get the fuck out of my way. I was too stupid to think ahead and I want what you're trying to buy." It is a miserable time of year. Dimwitted retailers depend on the season to save them, instead of having created year-around sales strategies. This is as commercially dimwitted, and lazy, as the holiday consumers' shopping strategy. By the way, I am completely aware, based on historical evidence, that Jesus was most likely born in what we call July and that the Christian Church appropriated a very popular Pagan fest celebrating the return of The Light as His birthday. It would be (to put it lightly) difficult to overcome so many years of tradition; so I will say to you last-minute, driven, despite shoppers a few weeks hence what I say to my clients: The Lord did not get his material gifts on His birthday. There are 12 days to Christmas, my friend. The Magi (astrologer-kings) arrived in Bethlehem and gave Him their gifts on Twelfth Night, which the French call Petite Noel.

reply

I very much dislike this gradual, and accelerating, pushing ahead of the seasons. I'm ok with putting out Halloween stuff in September, but Christmas stuff? NO. Save that for November.

reply

Me too -- Halloween stuff in September? I think that's the right time. Christmas stuff in September?? PLEASE STOP IT!!!!

Something else that annoys me is what's shown on regular TV. All year round, many TV channels in the UK show movies that are pretty much held by everyone to be essentially Christmas viewing. Then these channels seems to forget all about showing these movies when it actually IS Christmas!!! You look around for something vaguely themed if you're in the mood, and you just find "regular" movies instead. Yet back in May they ran the entire Home Alone franchise and It's a Wonderful Life and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. . .

I also saw Christmas Trees in a store the other day. Yikes. That stuff shouldn't be out until after Thanksgiving. Old Skol guy here.

Were gonna start seeing Christmas stuff in a few weeks

reply

"Too soon" is more than one month before the holiday.

American (greed-driven) retail sucks ass.

And not in a good way.
