What did you watch this week (03/09-09/09)

Busy week for me so not a lot of movies.

DOA : Dead or Alive (2006 DVD) : I stayed away from this movie as long as I could but always was curious about it. Especially since I fell in love with Jaime Pressly in My name is Earl. The trailer is better than the film, that’s for sure. I wish it could at least have been a ‘so bad it’s good’ kind of movie but it’s not. Just a bad movie with a few moments of good fighting and one or two highlights. 3.5/10

The abominable Dr. Phibes (1971 DVD): ’’ A doctor, scientist, organist, and biblical scholar, Anton Phibes, seeks revenge on the nine doctors he considers responsible for his wife's death.’’ Strange and intelligent, weird and funny, creepy with a cool atmosphere and solid acting. I think that’s a good description for this film. The two investigators were fun to watch. The murders were even more fun. (Except the one with the rats on the plane) 7-7.5/10

The Chinese Zodiac (Sap ji sang ciu 2012 Bluray) : Those who follow this thread for a while now know that Im a loyal Jackie Chan fan but this one was a miss for me. It’s too childish, the story was too standard, the special effects were poor and it seriously lacks realism. Otherwise, it was colorful, the pace was good although it was a bit too long and the fight scenes were okay although there wasn’t enough of them. 5/10

Preacher Season 1 (DVD): I loved it. The Pilot was good but episode 6 (The Sundowner) was the best of all. The last episode left me with mixed feelings but I hope to find Season 2 on AMC.com because I can’t wait to continue this show.

The mummy ( 2017)...the third time i've seen this movie....it's much better then the Brendan Fraser versions...i still don't understand why people hate this movie...
Guardians of the galaxy vol.2 - so,they bring Stallone and Kurt Russell in it...the first was better.

reply

Third time huh? I remember it was in your post from last week too.
Rate The Mummy (2017).... Do it Now!

Go!

reply

"Good thing we like a challenge."

Sometimes you just want to see some of your personal favorites:

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) - Bogart was not nominated for his performance which was criminal IMO. Walter Huston was great as Howard. Still holds up well nearly 70 years later. 9/10

Village of the Damned (1960) - Those kids were creepy. George Sanders was so much older than Barbara Shelly who was so beautiful in this movie. One of my favorite sci-fi of all time. Just 114 mins long. 9/10

I binged the first 6 episodes of The Sinner (2017) - I have to wait for 7 and 8 before I rate it. I have a feeling there is a big twist coming. The sex talk and interaction between the sisters we could have done without.

God's Pocket (2014) - More of a dark comedy than a crime movie. Stars Philip Seymour Hoffman in his second to last film. 6.5/10

Black Butterfly (2017) - Stars Antonio Banderas as a writer living in an isolated cabin who is down on his luck. He picks up a stranger who gradually takes over his life. Nothing is as it seems in this movie. One twist too many. 6.5/10.

reply

Sierra Madre and Village were fantastic
Didnt see the others but ill look for that Banderas one...hes pretty cool
Thx!

reply

Havent seen any but thanks for the post! I'll look them up.

reply

Well said hownos.

Sierra Madre is one of Bogart's best movies.

Village of the Damned although I haven't seen it in awhile I still remember seeing for the first time when I was a kid.
Excellent movie.

I saw God's Pocket a few years ago. I think your rating is similar to mine.

reply

Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a masterpiece. It's perfectly done. Walter Huston is a favorite of mine and he's incredible in this.
Village of the Damned is a great scary movie. George Sanders is one of those actors that steals every scene. I haven't seen this in a long time.

Yeah, anytime any book is transfered to the screen there is always a group of people who will hate.

reply

Well, I'll be looking forward to your "report" on Black Books next week. I hope you do like it :)

I really like Bill Bailey as well. And I had the pleasure of seeing Dylan Moran live last year /I think.../ Excellent comedic talent here. Enjoy!

reply

Conan the Barbarian last night (my favorite of all time)
Narcos S 3 (really great...sad i finished...)
Several low budget horror doozies on Netflix/Prime/Cablevision (all junk)

reply

As a Arnold fan, I yet have to see Conan.

I know, I know...

reply

Oh pls see it!!
I cant be the only living fan of this bitchin' movie!!!
Amidst all of the cool swordplay and wizard villainy is a really beautiful love story..of all things!
God this movie has it all!
Theres even a pants shittingly gigantic snake!

reply

Haha, I swear I will someday.

reply

Conan the Barbarian (Arnold, not remake) is my favorite movie. Oliver Stone + John Mullius + Arnold + Sandhal Bergman + Norse heritage? I am SO there! How the fuck can you go wrong?! All pussies, step the fuck aside.

If you haven't seen this movie, prepare for your Arnold fandom to explode exponentially when you do.

"Do you want to live forever?"

"All the gods, they cannot sever us. If I were still dead , and you still fighting for life, I would come back from the dark, from the pit of Hell, to fight by your side!"

- Valeria, Queen of Thieves, first truly convincing warrior woman in the history of movies

I rest my case.

Edit: PLUS operatic sound score by Basil Poulsilis is not quite Wagner's Twilight of the Gods but that was anything but 80s synthesisizer?? Tantamount to brilliant.

reply

Amazing movie
Probably rewatch again this weekend after work!

reply

Haha, dwam, you really love it!

i'll look it up on amazon.

reply

That score makes me want to break things and hurt people its so effective...
And im not an angry dude:)

reply

Huh, so that score is a bit like Tequila for me...

reply

Lol
Yup exactly

On video, I have been watching 'The Strain', catching up on season 2 and 3 so that I can start watching the current season 4.
I just finished the finale of season 3 last night.

New TV series: I watched the Finale of Twin Peaks, the new season of American Horror Story, Project Runway,
watching a lot of msnbc during the day, I usually have it on in the background.

Old movies on TV:
Yesterday watched Bullitt, Aliens 3, American Psycho
Earlier in the week I rewatched 'The Last Supper' (not a religious movie!), I had seen it when it first came out and watched it again, it is very timely right now because of political divisions in this country!

reply

Bullitt was awesome
If you watch carefully that mustang loses like 14 hubcaps during the big chase sequence!

reply

Haha I did not catch that. That's like gunfights where a 6 shooter fires 50 magical bullets...

reply

Lolol
Like Hershals shotgun in Walking Dead
Endless Ammo engaged!!

reply

This probably goes without saying, but McQueen did his own driving in Bulllit. If you want to see unadulterated McQueen driving, see Le Mans, and the documentary Steve McQueen: The Man and Le Mans. People died making this movie. McQueen drove a full-on Porsche 917, one of the deadliest sports/prototype racing machines of all times (it nearly bankrupted Porsche until their engineers tamed the car) at very competitive racing speeds in this movie. The man had real talent behind the wheel.

So, too, did Paul Newman.

reply

Yeah i knew that but thx!
mcQueen also attempted the stunt jump at the end of The Great Escape (over the barbed-wire fence)
Apparantly he failed several times so they wound up hiring a cyclist stunt guy
Interesesting stuff...
McQueen was ALSO pulled over in the LA area during the height of the Manson Family insanity with a loaded/unregistered revolver in his sports car...
He WAS a beautiful lunatic...RIP

Yup- it could be redone right now it is so timely.
It's a good movie to see with friends and then debate-which murders were justified (if any)?
The discussions between the housemates also revealed many biases on their part.
Like when they killed that 'militant virgin' who was against sex-ed, the one guy started berating her as if she was a girl he went to school with- he had old grudges and was taking it out on her. He definitely revealed a sense of entitlement like all girls are just supposed to 'put out' just because a male finds them attractive. It's a very thoughtful movie. There are no good guys.

reply

don't think I can watch a movie with Cameron Diaz in it.

reply

She was old news, but people in other countries are just now seeing them.

Whenever the U.S. has a movie or series, other countries see it like years later.

reply

Cool, just added Bullitt to my watchlist.

reply

In chronological order, I watched:

The Case For Christ (2017) 7/10
Daddy (1995) 7/10
The Guilt Trip (2012) 8/10
Fear and Trembling (2003) 7/10
Master of the Flying Guillotine (1976) 6/10
A Dog’s Purpose (2017) 7/10
California Suite (1978) 6/10
To Die For (1998) 8/10
Jack the Giant Slayer (2013) 7/10
Crime Wave (1985) 8/10
The Silenced (2015) 7/10
It (2017) 8/10

reply

Hey! Haven't seen any of those but a few of them look interesting.

reply

I actually had seen two movies this week!

The Break Up https://moviechat.org/tt0452594/The-Break-Up

The Switch https://moviechat.org/tt0889573/The-Switch

Fun Fact:

I found that there was one actor, who acted or was seen in both of them and I found that Jennifer Aniston was in both. It was not pre-figured, as in the movies were picked because they both had Jennifer Aniston starring nor the other actor.

She is not a bad actress by any means. It was just the first time I had seen her in a movie after a long time.

reply

I never would have guessed that you were a rom com fan ??

reply

I was watching movies with my sis and her bf.

But with Stonekeeper, it is an obligation to share my thoughts when his posts come up. Good discussions!

reply

my wife watches rom coms hence I have two TVs.

reply

What do you watch?

reply

crime/dramas/sci-fi/westerns/war/horror

reply

Ah!

reply

Haha, that was funny.

I do too, she usually watches in the bedroom and me in the living room but I make the effort to watch a romcom with her once in a while, even though she won't watch Fight Club with me. I actually enjoyed some of them (romcoms) but most are boring to me.

reply

Fight Club is a _bit_ of a rom-com tho. Because, there is a romance, and it is funny. Just sayin'.

reply

I'll tell her that, thanks!

reply

Let me know how that goes :D

Does she have a problem with the violence or the overall premise /though they do overlap/? It's still a great film, even if I began to find the themes a bit... silly? the last time I watched it.

reply

Too dark, violent and depressing... I have to give her credit for trying to watch but she did not get far.

reply

I agree with you on SK

reply

Im slightly interested in The break up.

The switch was pretty bad but it had a few moments. 5/10

reply

It was two movies that were definitely outside of my comfort zone. I usually watch films with Bradley Cooper, Zac Efron, comedies etc.

Big thing towards the end, not many viewers liked it. Not sure why. Even on IMDb, they said people had a problem with it.

reply

oh, I don't even remember.

reply

I haven't seen Dr Philbes in awhile. - maybe worth seeing again.

reply

It think its worth a rewatch because it's so unique.
