re: "Duck face"...Maybe I'm missing something....

But when, especially in selfies of women, did someone decide that the "duck face" was even remotely attractive? To me it looks either ridiculous, cheap, or both....

Am I missing something? Serious question.

reply

No,you don't😉

reply

Sorry, croft...the language thing...do you mean I'm not missing something, or I don't get it?

reply

You're not missing something,napsdufroid...I don't understand either...i'm good on puzzles,though...but,this...

reply

Let me know if you ever figure out why women like looking ridiculous in them....

reply

See, this is only one reason of many...that I never envolved,so far,in a relationship😉

reply

I don't think so, croft. You're a guy, right? If you choose not to date someone who insists in making that idiotic face constantly, that shows your good taste, not a lack of it.

reply

Yes,napsdufroid...I am 100% male,my uersname confused you?

reply

Originally, but I recall seeing elsewhere you're a guy. The rest of my opinion about your good taste remains.

reply

Yeah...well,it was a bad joke from them,napsdufroid...I explained in my earlier posts the origin of my name.

reply

This has nothing to do with whether you are man or a woman! We ALL now know that you are a MAN!
The question????? Do you honestly think that this is attractive?

reply

In short,MissMargo...no.

reply

Apparently I am at "that age".
I had to look up what this was.
After looking at some of the pictures I actually chuckled at some of them.
Hopefully that answers your question.

reply

Yeah, it's kind of an age thing, as it's mostly younger women doing it, but I've also seen it with a number of older women too, who one would think are sensible enough to know better.

reply

Wow! This one takes me back to our IMDb days. I use to frequent the Big Bang Theory board. There was this troll who use to criticize Kaley Cuoco and her character, Penny for everything. This troll was always going on and on about her doing the Duck Face thing. For a long time, I had no idea of what that person was talking about until it was explained to me. I guess she does sort of do that with her mouth, but I just assumed that was a natural thing with her.
Personally, I think it looks a bit stupid. Maybe women screw their mouths up that way in order to accentuate their cheek bones??? Who knows? I think it looks silly.

reply

It looks way beyond silly (IMO, of course).....

reply

My idea of sexy or alluring is way different than this.
Are those older women the same ones who want to be their daughters best friend instead of being a mother.
Some of them look cartoonish.

reply

More than likely, they are indeed. And yes, most do look cartoonish. Although, to be 100% honest, I have seen the rare situation where the mom actually looked way sexier than the daughter. But as I said, it's rare.

reply

Yeah, FB really manages to bring out the stupid in people, doesn't it ?

reply

In about a thousand ways

reply

I think it looks like they've been punched in the mouth. Or stung by a bee.

reply

Yep. I just can't figure out when some "beauty guru" declared it as attractive and/or sexy....

reply

The first I knew of this was watching the show The Affair, and noting how odd it was both female leads cast had naturally protruding upper lips.

One of them would often appear to accentuate it, and I couldn't figure out why. Now I know it was an actual trend! Strange. It's not attractive, but I remember wondering at the time if someone, in some universe, thought it was.

I just read that as of 2015, duck-face selfies are now considered passé, and has been replaced with fish-gape selfies [laugh]

reply

So they replaced one stupid look with another....Jesus

reply

Judging by the few examples I saw, fish gape isn't nearly as ridiculous as duck face, if that's any consolation, Naps!

I'm amused facial expressions have now become trends :D

reply

True, but still contrived-looking.

reply

For a while there, sticking the tongue out (like a money shot from a porn shoot) was popular, mostly in Europe, usually coupled with a sideways "V" sign done with the fingers.

Kinda like this:

reply

Miley has a lot to answer for.

reply

Yeah, I remember that...thank God it was short-lived.

reply

That's even more bizarre than duck face!

reply

Don Knotts mastered that years ago in The Incredible Mr. Limpet.

reply

[laugh]

Now all I'm going to see whenever I see a duck face is Don Knotts.

reply

Hey, what can I say ? The power of suggestion [ winking ].

reply

Not that i ever did it myself, but I thought this was "out". Too funny that it was ever in. haha

reply

I think that the sucking in of the cheeks to create a pout is supposed to make the lips look plumper and therefore "sexy" or like bj lips to be crude!

It was adopted here by the idiots on a reality show called The only way is Essex, who posted selfies like that and became like a plague!

I don't really get the selfie thing anyway.

reply

"I don't really get the selfie thing anyway."

That's a whole other discussion for another day....

reply

It is..
Then we could talk about the current trends for huge sprayed on eyebrows!

reply

I guess we can blame Cara Delevingne for that.

reply

Ya think? Not like she was the first actress with prominent brows....

reply

It's attractive... for other women. Didn't you know most of the time women pose, dress and put on make up not for other men but for other women? Men also do that when flexing muscles and driving big trucks. It's psychology, man!

reply

Don't think it's attractive to anyone with good taste, including other women. Witness what several posted here...

reply

I agree it looks dumb, but I sometimes wonder if people do it because they are self-conscious about just smiling\posing naturally and ham it up to overcompensate.

reply

That's a possibility, but I think most do it because "everyone else does."

reply

Which of course goes against the individualism that everybody wants.
Everybody want to be treated as an individual but then they all look and act alike.
The classic "you don't know me" argument.
Looking at some of those pictures I think I can make a good estimate on what kind of person you are.

reply

Oh, most definitely. And it'd likely be a pretty good estimate.

reply

I think it happened in the 1990s, as a result of the popularity of the Olsen twins. No joke, I still feel like today, a lot of women want to be the Olsen twins, and back then it was even more obvious - everything they did was copied, from hairstyles to fashion to yes, the duck face look, which requires you to pull in the cheeks and gives you a slimmer looking face.

reply

But it really doesn't; it gives you a stupid-looking face

reply

I don't disagree. You can look slimmer and stupid at the same time.

reply

Weren't they anorexic though?

reply

Yes! But they still to this day do it.

reply

That's so depressing.
