How come people don't post in the individual pages?

I've attempted to start conversations on several individual pages here and noticed that about 99% of the board activity seems to take place in this general section.

I'm just trying to get a general idea of why this is. Are people just apprehensive about branching out to the individual pages? Do those pages perhaps feel a bit like mausoleums because of the archived posts in them?

Just curious since this site has individual pages like IMDB and that was the most popular feature on that site.

This is like the fourth post about this on general discussion.

Suggestion: Anytime you want to comment on a movie's/show's messageboard, alert people on here first. Put up a thread that states "Discussion of *put movie/show title here* on its message board"

The reason of why people are not spreading out in individual message boards is because when this site was first built, much of the activity has been in the general discussion. Since this is the case, people would much rather write about anything NOT movie related than movie related. The convenience of writing on general discussion is easier than having to click on a specific show or a movie and then thinking up a discussion for it.

When IMDb was made, most of the people on there were moviegoers or show watchers and thus, it would always be checked out. Producers, crew, background, etc. would also be there on the daily. IMDb even had times when that movie/show would be on cable. Everything played into being on the message boards. Here, about 75% of the posts are not movie related and there is still some difficulty in weeding out the trolls, who further stray away from posting anything movie/show related.

Oh and also worth mentioning, there was a huge drop in the amount of people visiting each site. This site came about towards the end of February and so it is going to take a lot of catching up, member wise, than all those on IMDb.

I also started disscusions for tomb raider movie, but only a few " followed".😉

reply

Yeah, I tried getting discussions going on the Batman vs Superman and Better Call Saul boards but only a couple people posted and then moved on.

Hopefully this site will pick up traffic. It's the best IMDB replacement for sure.

reply

Have you noticed the Trending section on the home page? It shows all the boards of films/shows/actors with new posts. It's far more active than General Discussion.

9 times out of 10, when I post on an individual board, because it shows up in Trending, at least one or two people comment afterwards.

Also, while there are a number of us who hang out here in General Discussions (because originally it was the most active area), if you look at the new posts on the various boards, you'll see predominantly people who never post here.

I agree it's the best IMDB replacement. It has been picking up traffic, but it's only a few months old. Hang in, post on whichever boards most interest you, as often as you can, and MC will continue to pick up steam.

So THAT'S what that bar is all about! Gotcha, thanks!

reply

I didn't know what it was to begin with, either. Apparently we're in the minority, because almost everyone else did.

Anyway, yeah, that's what it is, and you're welcome. It's a very cool feature. Not only does it allow people to see which boards are currently active, but I've discovered lots of films and shows that look interesting I'd have never heard of otherwise. Have fun :)

reply

Yeah, I can't wait for this place to truly take off. If enough people come here, this will feel like the old IMDB again. I've been recommending many old IMDB pals to come here and some already have.

DAMN, you Marvel fans can be a bit slow sometimes. 😍😍😍😍

I knooooow...I got a boyfriend easily distracted with the latest Face Off season.

reply

Maybe it's just the way I perceive things, but the very first thing that popped in my mind was the movie "Face/Off" when you said that--you know, the one with John Travolta and Nicolaus Cage?

"We're gonna take his face.....OFF!"

reply

I think of that movie every time we watch the competition series!

reply

There's simply not enough people to generate individual board conversations yet. There's only a few dozen who post a lot in General... and then you divide that amount by those who have seen or care about a specific show or movie and that number quickly reduces to only a few or zero. I think if a show isn't new or hot, it will require fans of a show to post very consistently until others find them. In a way, it's almost like starting their own message board. Because most people don't want to go through the trouble of starting their own community, they will usually get discouraged and just go somewhere else. But they should keep posting if they ever want to recreate what once existed at imdb.

^^^THIS.

That's what I've been saying. If dozens of people post on a given board, you're more apt to find something that you wish to comment on.

For example, "The Big Bang Theory" had dozens of posts a day. Now, it's down to less than 5 per week.

There just isn't enough traffic. It's pretty hard to sit there and talk to yourself. The IMDB community is split up and splintered. If this place endures, it'll take years before it's as active as IMDB was.

Just my opinion.....

I'm doing the best I can to start conversations on both popular and obscure films. I hope eventually it will attract newer people to the site down the line.

imdb.com had the favorites list which I had bookmarked to easily see which boards had new messages. Even if they didn't, seeing the titles gave me ideas for new topics.

I much prefer the individual pages. It was the only reason I used imdb. So I, for one, will probably be mostly posting on the various pages instead of here.

reply

That's the spirit! You need to spread that particular brand of Catsidhe "love" around the other boards like the old days.

You gonna get hunted for saying that some day....😈

maybe i've missed it but is there a category for "technical improvements", i.e. things we might want to see on the site that was on IMdb? you've done a fantastic job bringing the threads over and, I too, go on the individual movie/actor sites if i want to know something. however, having the content like below would be helpful. i

Trivia
The Life magazine read by Toht on the plane to Nepal is dated November 30, 1936, which is also the day the social activist Abbie Hoffman was born. Steven Spielberg would years later be initially slated to direct a project about Hoffman and his fellow defendants in the Chicago Seven. See more »
Goofs
When Indy and Marion travel from Nepal to Egypt, super-imposed over the map showing their route, is a Douglas DC-3. The DC-3 first flew on 17 December, 1935. The first aircraft of this type were delivered to American Airline during 1936. KLM Royal Dutch Airline also received their first DC-3 in that year, and from August 1937 used it on their Amsterdam-Batavia (now Jakarta)-Sydney route, replacing earlier Fokker aircraft. The majority of all the 300 to 400 DC-3 airframes built before World War II were in fact flying for American, Eastern, United, and TWA airlines within the U.S., and it would have been very unlikely to find one flying between Nepal and Egypt in late 1936. I think it's all based on what Jim was able to 'import' from IMDB. He's the only one who will know if more in-depth information like this will be available at some point. His focus has obviously been on the message boards and he's done a great job with that.

reply

thank you for your quick reply. as soon as i finish downton abbey, i'll be posting something. i took a glance real quick and tried to avoid spoilers which can't be helped. watching a movie then coming here is the best thing but watching a tv series is another! i caught a quick glimpse of one thread and i said "ahhh i'm outta here" 'cos i don't want to know anything :) yet.

reply

As others have said, this is a new site and it will take time to build. I think you have to be patient, keep posting on individual pages and realize that with fewer members than IMDb had it will take longer to see responses to your posts. Don't shy from responding to old posts, either. You likely won't get a response from the original posters but you'll revive the page, it'll pop up in Trending, people will see it and hopefully respond with a post of their own.

reply

Exactly. I'm part of a Stephen king group on Facebook and I told them about movie chat if they wanna discuss any of the films.
