UPDATE: Ignore Feature

Due to popular demand, I dropped everything this morning and quickly implemented an ignore feature. You’ll now see an ignore button in the bottom right corner of each post that you may click to permanently ignore a user. Once ignoring a user, you won’t see any of his/her posts.

NOTE: I hacked this together very quickly, so it’s still a little rough around the edges. For example, there’s currently no way to un-ignore a user, so use this button cautiously. Few other quirks that I’m ironing out as well, but it should be functional now. Mods are coming soon as well.

Are you logged in or logged out when you see them?

reply

It only works when you're logged in, if that seems to be the problem.

reply

[deleted]

That's weird... Maybe try emailing Jim about it?

reply

Yes Jim is busy right now. He told me on facebook

reply

Yeah that sounds like a glitch. I haven't come across it yet though. But Leia is right, email Jim about it. He wants to know about the glitches so he can fix them.

reply

Ignored

reply

I think some of them have multiple accounts with extremely similar names. I blocked one of them as soon as I found out about the ignore button and two hours later one of his shitposts came up again.

reply

Yes ignore them

reply

Wait... I just thought of something... If everyone is simply ignoring the trolls, how would they get reported and dealt with? Can mods still ignore people? Am I missing something here? Is the trick just to report before ignoring?

reply

Report and ignore. I am a mod i know this.

reply

You're not a mod, liar

reply

I'm assuming Jim knows how many times a user was ignored. Knowing this, it's easier to deal with trolls (some shadowbans would be great).

reply

[deleted]

Ah, yes. That would be useful. As long as he checks to make sure the people ignoring aren't just trolls ganging up on people.

reply

I am experienced at this don't you worry darling

reply

Obviously yeah.
It will be your job too when you'll be mod I guess ;-)

reply

[deleted]

Shh... We don't know who the mods are yet. Don't blow my cover before I even start! 😉🙊
I did volunteer, though, and multiple people have voted for me, lol.

reply

Sorry but I am The Lord of The Rings

reply

Is there voting?

reply

[deleted]

Not officially. But people have said how if they had to choose a mod, I'd be a good option, or similar comments; voting with words. Not making this up; just look at the "Interested in Being a MovieChat Moderator?" thread.

reply

Ok thanks, I had not looked at that thread recently since I do not want to be a mod.
I'd sooner get a root canal with no anesthesia.

Do people know you from imdb?

reply

Jim knows me from IMDb. We are good buddies.

reply

Ben, I know you from imdb and what the heck??

reply

Upvote me as your moderator Imperator ! I am impartial and fair !

reply

Do you have any other hobbies?? Why don't you go read a book, sleep or fly a kite?

reply

I am the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be !

reply

Nope. I was never on IMDb. I just post sensible things, I suppose.

reply

You don't know how imdb boards work then. I do

reply

I didn't see the VOTE Thread..darn!

reply

Lol. You were one of the ones that "voted" for me, remember? c;

reply

Not everyone will put the trolls on ignore. The other trolls want to see their posts so that they can continue the Itchy and Scratchy show.

Mods probably should not ignore anyone, since they need to see everything.

reply

Good point... Maybe mods will be able to see reported posts separately in order to act on them or something?

reply

[deleted]

"Yes as a moderator i am seeing some reports but jim has told me not to act yet."

Such a ball buster....

reply

You can just open a tab without being signed in if you want to see an ignored person... but that sort of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

reply

[deleted]

Yeah. Some of the trolls are really making a mess of the boards, though. I feel bad for people who are looking to join and are faced with this s***storm.

reply

If a board has any traffic it will have a lot of trolls, especially until moderators arrive doesn't matter where you go. Jim should've either moderated himself or had a few real life friends help him with this project when he started it just to avoid this situation. As I said before, a lot of these trolls are clever and it will require Blade Runner like skills to tell the trolls from the regular posters. It's at the point where he should try to quietly recruit some people from different boards, so he knows they aren't just kissing his ass to get the job.

reply

Yeah, I know there will always be some trolls no matter what. Jim has dealt with a few trolls, but he's only one person after all.

He's done a great job, but it's like opening a new shopping center with a cholera epidemic. What it good is a nice selection of stores and beautiful architecture if you have a space riddled with disease. The community is the most important priority when making a website.

reply

Meh, I don't think it's quite that bad, but interesting simile anyway. ;3

reply

lol... of course I'm exaggerating but when the majority of posts are troll ones then it needs to be the priority. If I ignored every troll, I'd lose more than half the content right now.

reply

Yes i am ignoring trolls. Still great work going on here! Great work Jim!

reply

Yeah. Starting to regret ignoring some of them, but oh well. It's still better without their spam clogging everything.

Also, I think a better metaphor would be building a huge garden on your own. The flowers may be beautiful, but without help, the weeds will choke them.

reply

That works... I just thought the cholera metaphor was more vivid and more emphatically expressed my negative feelings towards them. Don't regret ignoring them... I'm just making sure before I pull the trigger on them because it's not reversible. Eventually I expect to block them all too. Why live under the illusion that the board is more active than it is? I'd rather see a smaller community with sincere posters.

reply

IMDB2

We deal with trolls harshly :p

reply

Yeah. It kinda sucks that it gets rid of all the following posts instead of only the person you're ignoring, though. Like if a troll made a post, but someone made a witty comeback, I wouldn't be able to see the non-troll's response without logging out.

reply

Just keep a separate window or tab open and you don't need to log out... or use incognito mode to view the ignored posts. No need to log in and out. But I'm truly not curious to see what they are writing so I don't even do that. I'm sure over time Jim will fix all of those things... seems like he's learning this on the job.

reply

Yeah, I know there are ways around it. Just that I wasn't expecting it to happen.
Jim seems pretty experienced, though.

reply

Yeah Jim says less kissing his ass and more practical work. Chop Chop!

reply

[deleted]

Thanks jim. Sorry you had to drop everything to build this.

reply

Thank you Jim!
I just wanted to report a little bug, I'm still getting notifications from people I ignored.
I know this function is a work in progress though, so no biggie.

Anyway, thank you again :-)

reply

I'm getting the same problem. No big deal, though.

reply

Funny i am getting the same problem too.

reply

I mean, it's better than nothing but I was really hoping for a Facebook-style block feature that makes yourself invisible to whomever you're blocking as well. On IMDb the ignore feature had little effect on determined trolls. A block feature would be better. Hopefully this is just a first step to that.

reply

Yeah, that would be useful.

reply

It's a start! The only ones not happy with an ignore/block button are the trolls! That's hilarious. They're going crazy over it! :)

reply

Thank you Jim

reply

A million thanks Jim!! 😃👍👍👏👏👏

reply

Fantastic!!! I will however think twice or three before putting someone on ignore. Under one thread someone fits (due to prior comments on other threads) the idea of a troll, and on other threads will answer with a decent and relevant comment.

Thank you, Jim, once again!!!
