This is Actually a Great Thing [Thread closed]

Think about it. IMDb likes to tout about how it needs to be a professional website for actors, their agents, their publicists, their lawyers, and managers; however, this is like the middle class's perspective of what IMDb should be. It could potentially be better than IMDb in the sense that we can still see all the things IMDb has, minus anything that could be copyright infringement. We could even add how much each movie made or add box office amounts. One website I found was www.boxofficemojo.com

It could certainly be a database of what us, common people, think about movies, actors, and actresses and even more. IMDb never really listed the gross, movies made. Something to think about?

reply

Not a bad idea. I often check boxofficemojo and it would be handy to have a link in this place.

But first things first. What I miss the most when I click on an individual movie board is the year a movie was made.

EDIT: Some shows have the year and some don't... strange.

reply

Definitely. Although, after I wrote this, I checked back and I do not think that this place was made to be IMDb. More or less, I think it is a supplement to them. I am thinking that if Jim were to include ALL the features of IMDb, the creators of IMDb would have a problem with it. Most of the movies or tv series you look up, you will notice that they all have a "link back to IMDb". This makes me think that IMDb is still going to be a source for this page and this page is just a supplement, since the message board portion is unavailable. Then again, who knows? We might as well request anything we want to see added. Maybe this website will hold its own?

reply

Did this ever change? Do all the movies have years now?

reply

It's still the same. Right now out of 6 movies in the Trending Bar, 3 have the year written and 3 don't.

When you search for movies though, they all have a year written in the list of results.

reply

More or less it is a glitch.

reply

From the beginning, my view has changed about this site. It was never meant to be a supplement. IT IS directly competing with IMDb and will be the best site there is, at least for message boards!

reply

Only time will tellπŸ˜‰

reply

What would you think would make it better than IMDb, if it has not all ready?

reply

MovieChat is already miles better than IMDb... in the forum department! 😲

reply

In the forum department... i'm not sure of that, but it would be nice to have an avatar when we post something ( on other sites it's working without any problems ),but hey,i'm satisfied as how it is today.I hope that it will last as long as the imdb boards did, maybe longer.πŸ˜‰

reply

How can you not sure of that??

MovieChat has forums, IMDb does not have any. MovieChat wins.

reply

Well,i don't like to repeat myself, but if you check the "old" imdb TR boards, then you'll see that are still missingπŸ˜‰

reply

We definitely need to write to Jim about this. On a board that has to do with message boards, it should have a full database of all available movies/tv series.

reply

Well, arvin,it's been...i think 3 months now since i contacted jim about this. It's not a big deal, but, for me as a fan is kinda important,if you know what i mean.

reply

3 months? Wow!

Just yesterday, I had seen people writing about other changes that needed to be made. Unless he thought it was not important, he probably never did anything.

Actually, I did also see some recent posts from Jim on those problems (the notifications) being fixed.

reply

Yes,the notifications are working since this morning...and about the Tomb Raider boards...i can live without them, but in a way,i miss them.

reply

You should not have to live without them though. In fact, those boards should have been more of a priority than notifications.

reply

Yeah...they should...but you can't satisfy all the people, you have to choose what is more important😏

reply

Or it could just be done. I think excuses are what makes things NOT as important. There is a way to accomplish MOST things. Like you had said, not everyone is perfect. I would still expect 75% of things to be accomplished.

reply

Only time will tell.Who knows, maybe eventually they will bring those boards too...i hope.

reply

When you told Jim, did you provide any incentive of why they should be on here? How did you "sweeten the deal"?

reply

I didn't "sweeten"the deal at all,i just ask him politely,as i am all the time,if he can bring the Tomb Raider (2018) movie boards here.I didn't know that for a small thing like this i have to..." beg" someone for thisπŸ˜‰

reply

Well, you are not "begging" per say. You are just supporting your defense in order to get something done. Sometimes people want to see how it would affect the current standing, in this case, the forums. It is more or less like preparing for a court case battle.

reply

At least, they brought the TR games boards here( those boards are "dead"anyway),if i compare with a case for the court to prosecute, then i need a better lawyer for thisπŸ˜‰

reply

Hire Lara on your behalf, to represent you. She will get the message across.

Additionally, you could definitely use that for your defense. Write that you see the game boards; however, to be complete, we need to have the movie board, based of the games.

reply

To be onest,i ask Lara for some help, but she currently has her hands full in dealing with TrinityπŸ˜‰And if they brought the Resident Evil boards here(not the game boards),they could bring the TR boards too...if they want,lf courseπŸ˜‰

reply

But you need to fight for it croft! It's not like they would bring it, unless there was a demand for it.

Think of it in terms of selling produce. If you do not try to sell your produce, you will not make $ off it.

reply

Yeah...if you think this way,it has some sense, but,i think i "fight" an already loosing battle.I can't fight on my own for what i like the most,i need some backup,re-enforcements here.Anyway not many people enjoi this...products like i doπŸ˜‰

reply

You can never lose if you make the attempt. Think of your video games. If you never tried a level, you would never beat it.

reply

I guess you're rightπŸ˜‰.By the way,they are not " mine" video gamesπŸ˜‰

The extraordinary is in what we do,not who we are.

reply

Right. Think of all the fans that could use those boards and you are the one making a difference!

reply

Well,don't make me a "hero"for this,but i think i'm the only fan hereπŸ˜‰

reply

You could not possibly be the only fan of TR. That game has some many followers!

reply

Yes,it has many followers,but not hereπŸ˜‰

reply

There are probably many here, but you have not met them yet.

reply

I checked those boards and nothing newπŸ˜‰

reply

Crazy. Not a single TR fan here...

reply

Crazy indeed,but is the truthπŸ˜‰

reply

How old is the game? I have heard that video games come out in the states and then end up going to other countries, years later. Maybe that could be why?

reply

The first tomb raider game was released in 1996πŸ˜‰

reply

So it could be that it is just a very old game. You only started with gaming a year ago and so that means it probably came out there in 2000.

reply

"There",you mean Romania?well it came out first for ps2 and pc.I bought a ps3 console ...i think almost 2 years ago (not many people in this country can afford a console). That's how i "fall in love"with LaraπŸ˜‰

reply

I really liked the playstation console. My favorite game on that was Hot Wheels Extreme Racing. I really wish they would have made a sequel to that game, it was so fun!

reply

Well,in those days,if you cannot afford to buy a console, there was ...how do i say in english...gaming saloons, with many consoles. You go there and rent a console per hour.

reply

That is funny! I never knew you could rent out a console.

I have no idea if they have that in the states.

reply

It was a "romanian" trademark,i don't think that you could've seen something like this anywhere, but those days are gone nowπŸ˜‰

reply

What ended up happening? They discontinued the console saloon?

reply

Well, the clients started to buy their own computers, not many consoles though, after they bought their own computers, they started to download the games from the internet,so slowly but surely, those saloons"died"

reply

Well, I guess that was a good thing. Charging a rate per hour could really hurt one's bank account.

reply

Another fact was that those saloons weren't quite legal.

reply

What?

reply

You're surprised?

reply

He is probably writing about the TR message boards. On Movie Chat, they did not all come aboard. I remember Croft writing to me about that on one thread.

reply

Yeah, about the avatars. Well, we do have avatars on our profiles. The big debate right now is whether it would disturb how fast the pages of this site would load.

reply

At least that right?

reply

It's the utmost important part.

reply

There must be some other changes you would want to see to make it better?

reply

Not really. Maybe improvements on the search function, it behaves strangely sometimes.

reply

I wish they were a search function per each message board. Then again, if we could follow threads, I think that would solve that problem.

reply

No, I mean the search function to search movies. The one on top of this site.

For example, if you search for "Underworld" it will only return 3 titles, and none of them are the sequels. You have to put "Underworld:" for it to be able to show the Bloodwars, Awakening and Evolution sequels.

This may make some people think that the message boards for those movies are not available in MovieChat. It needs improvement.

reply

Wow, yeah. The search function should be able to bring up everything listed with just the first few letters or even the first letter. That is insane!

reply

Did you ever email Jim about this?

reply

That's not exactly competition as there is no forum any more on imdb lol.

reply

Not in that aspect; however, movie databases is still a strong competition.

reply

* an avatar
* list of emoticons
* possibility to insert images, url's, maybe even vids
* code for text lay-out
* possibility to make lists
* check stuff you have already seen or want to see

reply

We already have avatars and url insertion (also other formatting options) here in MovieChat.

reply

He probably means the avatars on posts that we make.

reply

indeed

reply

It needs to be simplified, most users don't feel like looking up how to use the code. If other boards can do that MC surely can do so too.

reply

Yeah, like have the website recognize a link etc.

reply

Yup.

reply

Why were they not legal? For charging hourly rates?

reply

And because the owners ( some of them) didn't pay taxes on city hall for their bussines.

reply

oooo...that always seems to be a big one. Everyone must pay their taxes. They probably just accepted cash, under the table.

reply

Yes,the payment for the "rent" was under the table.

reply

OMG CROFT! That is horrible! Why would they do that?

reply

Why do you think they do that, arvin? The reason is so simple...greed,my friend,it 's always the greed.

reply

Well, I would think "You own a saloon and you basically have to pay for the property, the utilities, and merchandise. How on earth would you get away from paying taxes on it?" I mean someone would find out at that point.

reply

They did found out eventually...but you didn't take in consideration another thing : corruption. You pay something to someone at city hall and they leave you alone.

reply

So like a mob?

Well I would understand corruption; however, it is not like they were able to really hide for paying it. If they owned property and had a business for it, someone was going to find out. Most people, who do not pay taxes, end up not even having property. This is so no one can track them.

reply

You haven't been in Romania,do you? You'll be surprised how many things can you do if you know how to "cheat" the sistemπŸ˜‰

reply

It happens everywhere, not just in Romania. I am just wondering how they thought they could get by when they have property. It's like "Hello! I have a market set up and I am not paying what I am suppose to."

Now if it was just a person going around, renting out systems from his car, it would make sense. It would be hard to catch someone like that.

reply

Well,arvin...i don't know if you met in person a romanian, but we can be ...resourceful and with many ideas,in how to make bussinessπŸ˜‰

reply

Yes this is actually IMDB for normal people. IMDB is now all about the elites and censorship to appease the Hollywood elite.

reply

I totally agree!

reply

We really should get the box office gross amounts back. I remember when the "in theaters" had them.

reply

Oh and posting links without coding!

reply

Better ignore feature (as I have seen posts on people still getting notifications).

reply

Maybe box office results is asking too much for now, but better ignore feature would be really useful.

reply

Actually, we should have box office gross and budget for all movies that come up on either trending section.

reply

I don't see that happening in the near future. Maybe Jim will prove me wrong :P

reply

What is so not worthy about having that?

reply

I didn't say it's not worthy, I said I don't see it happening.

reply

And why not?

reply

Why is everyone acting like gloomy gusses? We'll get it. It takes time.

reply

Time is money. If things do not happen at a quicker pace, we may never get to see it.

What suggestions would you like to see added?

reply

For me this is what I like to see now that we got messaging:

1. Get a suggestion board. So that way we can suggest things and see if they can be implemented.

2. Fix ignore

3. Get a list of our favorite boards like imdb had for quick access.

4. More buzz on Twitter and Facebook for the website. Attract more users.

That for starters

reply

We really need a suggestion box.

reply

I agree 100%

Try copying and pasting your suggestions into a PM directly to Jim. See if you get any feedback from him:

https://moviechat.org/messages/new/?recipient=jim

reply

That would definitely work.

What suggestion do you have?

reply

What Strannger wrote is right on the money for me.

reply

Nothing else? We need expansion and ideas!
