Help me identify this

I grew up in the UK but remember seeing a series of short films on TV - American , black and white, funny 'documentaries/fly on the wall'-type, about everyday 'modern/family life' with a humorous narration usually about a family man and his trials and tribulations going on a picnic, taking a vacation, etc. The narrator would speak to the characters and they would break the fourth wall (although I seem to remember they never/rarely spoke). I am guessing these were 1940s/50s. Any ideas?
