Are there any experimental films that have the same themes as a classic fairy tale? References?

Try Valerie and her Week of Wonders. Not based on a classic fairy tale but has the same coming of age themes and fantastical/nightmarish feel.

As soon as I read the thread subject I was going to recommend Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. Then I saw your reply. This movie deserves much more attention.
