Is it just me, or did the year 2000....

...have more in common with the late 20th century than the 21st century? After all, VHS, floppy discs, and film photography were still common in 2000. Autotune, although around, was still a rarity. CDs were still the mainstream choice for legitimate music listeners. TV was still standard definition. Nintendo 64 was still offering cartridge-based gaming. Sega still made consoles.

Any thoughts?

The year 2000 certainly appeared to be much more 1990s (and 20th century) than after a certain point in 2001. I believe that September 11, 2001 was what started quite a lot of changes in attitudes. For a time period, at least, people didn't seem to be as at ease about public life. Terrorism and privacy were concerns that I remember, even though I was around 11 or 12. People definitely appeared to behave more carefree about their lives before late 2001. It's disturbing how acts of terrorism like that have since become relatively commonplace in the West, although it happens regularly in the Middle East, with Israel suffering on a daily or nearly-daily basis.

In 2000, I was still playing the Nintendo 64, but was also just transitioning to the Xbox, and then the Gamecube, the following year. Memorable N64 games include the two Zelda ones, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo Kazooie, and Bomberman Hero.

I don't remember much of the music of that point in time, as I was not a very frequent radio listener in the year 2000. Generally, in both the 1990s and 2000s, I mainly listened to pop music passively rather than actively, as if background music.

I remember my grandfather using one of those cameras that ejected the photograph, in which you had to wait for the photo to process. I've seen much less of that since the early 2000s, although Taylor Swift seems to have brought it back somewhat, with her 1989 album.

Regarding TV, I think the year 2000 was also when Pokémon was still dominating the Western anime scene, although starting to decline a bit, with viewers opting to view the new shows on Toonami and then Adult Swim. Cowboy Bebop remains a favorite to this day. Adult Swim probably did a lot to shift the Western anime viewership into the 21st century, in some ways. Before that point, watching anime in the United States felt different, watching shows mainly aimed at slightly younger audiences, I think.

I know right when things was going so well then 9/11 changed everything for us all. Its amazing how technology just keep on changing each year I can't keep up.

I was 17 going on 18 in year 2000 and yes the early 00s was a piggy back of the 90s. Music was everything then I love 80s, 90s, and I loved how the late 90s music carried over into the 00s artists that came out in the mid 90s was still hot up until about 2004/5 when music started to change for auto tune artists. Boy and girl bands was still cool.

My younger brother and sister was into video games, I love video games but I was more a music person. From late 1998 to January 2001 my family was in Spain (my dad was in the Air Force) I know my brother didn't have a Nintendo 64, we each had our hand held Gameboys I still was playing mine, we was still playing Sega, I think my brother had a gamecube or a playstation unless that a couple of years later. We still had our sega game from 1995/96 my dad brought for us.

Now cameras.....I remember the disposable cameras I think the video cameras was slowly fading away I remember my dad used to love that video camera and taking it to certain events to film us. I was using disposable cameras to take pictures at the time.

and this is exactly why I don't get why overly obsessed 90s fans are quick to hate on the year 2000 for not being a 90s year.

things didn't instantly change the second 11:59:59 pm 12/31/1999 became 12:00:00 am 1/1/2000.

but overly obsessed 90s fans act like either it did or that it started the change. and it's just ridiculous

I would argue it was around 2004 when things started changing (DVDs took over from VHS, computers got thinner, MP3 players started comming out!

The 2000s were a branch off. I think the rise of cult of personality changed attitudes on who got to be famous and for what reason. Reality tv is the descendant of it.

Of course. That's the way all the new decades and eras begin. Everything doesn't just change in an instant. Look at 1980 for instance. A lot of the popular shows, music and styles of the late 70s were still there. 1980 wasn't too much different from 1979. It's just like our lives. There are slow and steady changes. Things we stop doing. Things we start doing. We don't just throw out all our old clothing and technology overnight.

That's the way it goes. We were talking the other day about how some 80's fashion didn't start until the late 80's and carried into the mid-90's. But say "90's" and we think of ripped, baggy clothing and grunge.
