Is hip hop too soft now?

Seems like 20 years ago, hiphop was much grittier, grimier and more alpha-male than it is now; today all rappers do is brag about their swag, their haters and about sex -- things that rappers have been doing since the beginning, but it's feels more focused on than ever and more childish/one-note now. Just compare 1994 Wu Tang to Odd Future. The former seems like a real G's from the block, while latter seems like a bunch of play skool brats being silly and abstract with skateboards (!) Even calmer, less abrasive acts like Pharcyde were 'harder' than the average rapper of today. Now the genre seems overrun by swaggots and hipsters. For lack of a better example, it seems like today the genre is full of more water down, less impressive, babyish versions of Kid N Play.

Hyper-masculinity sort of reached it's apex with 50 Cent (as did overt homoeroticism, which should tell you something). It's a pretty tired narrative.

If you want some good and compelling gangsta rap you should try Freddie Gibbs or Vince Staples.

Millennials are basically dorks. They're the generation that got a trophy just for participating, is overly coddled and goes out of their way to not say anything "mean". That's why the masculinity is seeping out of hiphop and being replaced by a bunch of corniness. The same thing is happening with rock.

reply

Well who the hell do you think coddled millennials?

Death Grips, Killer Mike, and Freddie Gibbs are about as hard as any hip-hop artist from the 90's.

Edit: Danny Brown as well, when he tries to be (hear Pac Blood).

It needs a female.... with talent. Nicki minaj just doesn't do it for me

Missy elliott needs to get her album out

I miss the 90s/late 80s when we had lady of rage, yo-yo, mc lyte, missy, salt n pepa, smooth, Roxanne shante, lauryn hill, da brat, etc. Out there

Now its.like its just nicki minaj and no one else

I hope this upcoming female rapper named Toni Monroe that I found out about from Lady of rage makes it

Nah that's being too kind. Most rappers today are like a Fisher Price versions of Nelly.

Great topic. I was thinking the same thing at a concert i was at last night. I think i heard and seen worse stuff on today stuff compared to back in the days. Today rappers especially the females are not ashamed to show their sexuallity and what they working with.

reply

Agreed. Today rappers do come off like a corny hybrid of Nelly and Kanye. What Hip Hop desperately needs now is a Public Enemy/NWA-type of act to come in and make the genre darker, more serious and masculine again.
