JFK Crippled

Would 1960s America accepted JFK if the bullet hadn't killed him but left him paralyzed instead?

reply

Accepted in what way? As president they really didn't have a choice had he chose to remain in office (see Wilson after his stroke in 1919.) Would he have run for a second term and would he have been re-elected had he been left paralyzed is a pertinent question IMO.

Paralyzed to what degree? Hemiplegic or paraplegic? An essentially hemiplegic president was elected for 4 terms and is judged one of America's greatest presidents. Paraplegic, I don't know. Also what would the bullet through the throat have done to his speech?

Good question, Jumbax, no easy answer.

reply

FDR's disability was successfully kept from the public so perhaps he isn't a good example.

reply

That shooting was deliberately done to be a KILL. The same with RFK.

So were the shootings of President Reagan in 1981 and Pope John Paul II. Perhaps most relevant to the OP is the shooting of presidential candidate George Wallace which while meant to be fatal only resulted in crippling him.

reply

Why wouldn't they? There would be a tremendous amount of sympathy for him, and I'm sure JFK would come up with a quip to ease the awkwardness.

He probably wouldn't have run in 1964. He also could have resigned if he felt he couldn't do the job.

Basically, it was a non-issue.

Yeah but the difference was that Oswald (and the mysterious shooter) were trained in the military. They had the minds to go through with it. The man who attempted to assassinate Reagan and Pope John Paul II. (in the case of John Hinckley Jr.)

Hinckley's motivation for the attack was to impress actress Jodie Foster, over whom he had developed an obsession after seeing her in the film Taxi Driver.

Mehmet Ali Ağca shooting attempt on Pope John Paul II was probably bad planning. Bad shot. Which makes me wonder if he was the Grey Wolves version of Fredo Corleone and he was set up to go back to prison.

What mysterious shooter?
were trained in the military.
Sirhan Sirhan, however, did not have military training.

"Mysterious Shooter" I was just saying or acknowledging what other people believe.
