Those are called entoptic phenomena. They are just some residual stimulation of the retina from what you actually saw with your eyes opened, or simulation from pressure or something else.

You're not really seeing any object, and that's the interesting part. Without an object to be seen, you don't really see anything, even though you experience some sort stimulation.

Good topic. I would beyond darkness is what we want to see. It all depends on our own feelings on the matter. I see endless darkness without a trace of light or grey.
