Power Lines Collapsing Independent Film

Hello there all. Wow, it's been a long time since I've been on these message boards. Let me cut to the chase. I am finally filming my first feature length independent film and am working as hard as I can to make it look as professional as I can. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a scene that I'm scheduled to film soon. I have one character walking on a sidewalk and the overhead power lines begin sparking, (will add sparks in post), then the wire completely severs from the pole and hits my character in the head. What can I do to repeat this? The idea I have had so far is to use many angles to fake out the audience, and also to use a black rope that will be "sparking". Any other suggestions that may help me get the most out of this key scene?

If you want it to look realistic, you might want to make it look like an electric arc, and not a sparkler. Power lines are not pyrotechnics. Under what circumstance do you think that power lines would "spark"? If you want it to look good, you'll need it to look plausible.

The phrase "severs from the pole" makes no sense. Does the cable sever the pole? Does the pole sever the cable? Is the cable severed (cut) by some third object? Is the pole cut? Precisely what is happening?

If you want a "wire" to follow the same track again and again, you could use a relatively short length of stiff wire, and steer it from the other end. You can also use good old fishing line to help guide the wire to its spot. You can also make your "wire" out of a more suitable material, like fiberglass, for instance. Obviously you don't want your star to suffer a broken neck from a prop...

The wire severs from the pole. I believe I already stated that in my original post. I appreciate the advice but, as it turns out, I may have to go a different route by making my main character clairvoyant, as the location I had backed out of the deal and so, I'm back to square one. Still, thank you for the advice!

I'll just add that as a typical film goer, I would have believed that it was severed. I'm curious how it turns out, good luck!

Appreciate it. If you want to follow it and see where it goes:

How about those of us who know that power lines aren't bonded to poles?

reply

*whispers* I'm not going to respond directly but my answer to those who know that it's "not bonded to the poles" and "" is that I didn't read the OP's description so literally.
