The history of the process trailer please

A process trailer is a low trailer on which a vehicle is mounted along with the cameras and the production crew which allows an actor to appear he or she is driving the vehicle while it is actually being towed, presumably, by a stunt driver. I'm curious if anyone knows when this and other similar methods were developed and possibly which movie was the first to apply this innovation. I haven't had any luck with my searches regarding the time frame of its development or who gets the credit for this filming technique. Thanks.
