Why do we NEED a set-top box?

About a year ago, Time Warner took away the Oxygen channel from the standard lineup and put it in the digital cable lineup. I ONLY want to get the Oxygen channel, but I don't want a digital cable box because they're always glitchy + they will shut off & update at like 2AM while I'm watching TV, and I don't even want any of the channels other than Oxygen.

What I don't understand is, HDTVs support "digital" channels, and 2/3 of the channels on regular cable come in as "digital" and not analog, anyway. So in theory, why couldn't we just get the extra channels without a box?

Also, does anyone know if cable companies, or Time Warner specifically, allow you to pay extra a month just for one channel without the box?

Cable (and Dish) companies cant offer 1 single channel by itself. It's an FCC thing. If you dont have snow/rain where you live (so the dessert) you can get DishNetwork because apparently they have 5 packages all under 50 bucks. Dish sucks BTW.

Yeah, that's a really good question all right.

hmmm I don't know how to set up the set-top box - and have to do without all of those channels that come with the wayyy too expensive cable package - so they're really out to rip us off all right - and big time, too!

Mellow Salutations!

We pay $20 for our DVR-HD set-top box for the living room, but I'm not spending $10 extra PER ROOM for something that isn't even fully reliable.
