How many HDMI output jacks does your Blu-ray player have? If it has two or more, then you should use one output for your TV and a second output for the sound system. If the player only has one HDMI output, then you should check if your TV has both an HDMI input and output. In this case, connect the player output to the TV input and then the TV output to the sound system input. Some TVs do not support a true HDMI passthrough, so you may not get full surround sound capabilities. There is also the possibility that your sound system has an HDMI output. In that case, connect the player output to the sound system input and the sound system output to the TV input. If none of these work, then you should invest in an HDMI splitter to convert the single output on the player into two outputs or utilize an alternate connection method for the sound system (such as an optical cable).

I only have 1 blu ray hdmi output, and 3 hdmi outputs on my tv. I don't have the sound system yet but I was so confused when I was looking in the Bose store

Personally, I would advise against getting a Bose system. They are way overpriced for the sound quality. The only real advantage Bose has is with their pretty packaging. If you post what your budget is, there are many users here that can direct you to better systems for your money.

Yeah, they had some small system for $800. I only asked because I am looking for a sound system now and the guy in bose seemed like the best person in the mall to ask (since he works at a sound system store)

player->tv->amp

would be preferable to

player->amp->tv

and i was wondering why. connecting everything to the amp and then the amp to the tv saves you a few wires and helps with any possible lipsync problems.

i'm not aware of any benefits that would come from connecting to the tv first and amp second, and the dowsides are more cables hanging from the tv and possible lipsync-issues.
