I have a Steepeltone vinyl record player that but when I use headphones with it the sound still seems to be coming from the speakers - it's too loud to listen to as I'm worried other people are able to hear it if I'm listening to it at night - does anyone else have this problem with this kind of record player or know a way to mute the speakers when listening through headphones?

Some of those turntables have a jack for a sub woofer. Could you be using that plug instead of a headphone jack?

If the sound is a buzz, record players require grounding, by connecting a little horseshoe-shaped ground wire to a screw-tightened adaptor terminal on a receiver. Newer receivers might lack this ground terminal.
