Audiophile vs Home Theater Equipment

I was wondering if someone could help me understand the differences in an audiophile and home theater setup. I would also appreciate any recommendations on equipment that could do both well.

I’m trying to do research to purchase the best multipurpose setup to listen to music (vinyl, CD, streaming) and enjoy movies. Would it be possible to start off with something as 2.1 and then upgrade to 5.1 and alternate between the two when listening to music or watching movies? Or is this something that will require two separate setups?

I have been saving to make my first setup something that I do not have to upgrade for a long time. Ideally my budget would not exceed $3k total (although I’m flexible up to $5k if there is a major increase in quality). I’m looking for the following:

Good looking floor standing speakers (wharfdale vs monitor audio?)

Source/amplifier/receiver (don’t understand the difference)

Preamp for my turntable (Technic SL1200).

Any input that you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
