Crumbling DVD keep cases

What causes this? Twice in the past month or so, I've picked up a DVD keep case with a DVD in it from a cabinet, and the thing disintegrated into 1,000 pieces in my hand. The slightest touch caused breakage. (Fortunately, the disks themselves looked OK.) Anybody else had this happen, and know what causes it?

Are they exposed to direct sunlight?

Nope. The cupboard they were in was totally dark when closed, plus it contains dozens of keepcases which are fine.
