Independence Day: Resurgence bluray won't play

I rented this disc from Netflix. The trailers play. I can get to the movie menu, but when I try to play the movie, I get a red screen and the player gets stuck. This is a Sony machine that's probably 8 years old and not connected to the internet.

I've done some googling and wonder if there is some protection on the disc that requires a machine connected to the internet in order to play? I got a replacement disc from Netflix and exactly the same thing happened.
