Release Date Shuffling: Summer 2017 Edition

A few days ago, Fox announced that Alien Covenant would be moved from 8/4 to 5/19. They also moved the Kingsman sequel from 6/16 to 10/6, which is the day that Blade Runner 2049 is currently scheduled to come out.

The question is, which other films will need to move and to what dates as a result of this?

There are four other releases on May 19 besides Alien. They are Baywatch, Annabelle 2, The Nut Job, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Baywatch will probably be fine because it's a different type of movie than the others, but Annabelle 2 should probably move because Alien definitely has some horror elements to it. One of the two kids' movies should probably move as well, probably to July (oddly enough, there aren't really any kids' releases in July, although to be fair, Despicable Me 3 comes out on June 30.)

Also, Life (another 'sci-fi horror' type of film) will probably move out of May. It's currently scheduled to open up a week after Alien.

As far as the Kingsman situation goes, Warner Bros. knows better than to open up Blade Runner against Kingsman, and thus it will need to move.

So here are my 'release date shuffle' predictions:
1. Annabelle 2 will move to either July or August. Neither month has any horror films currently scheduled. July 7 could be a good choice, as it would be counter-programming Spider-Man.
2. Studios don't typically like to have two movies coming out on the same day, so Diary of a Wimpy Kid will be moved to mid-July (either 7/14 or 7/21,) a time of the summer which is (shockingly) currently lacking in family films.
3. Blade Runner will move to August 4 (Alien's original release date.) There are no blockbuster-type releases on the schedule in August at the moment.
4. Life never looked all that appealing to begin with and would be DOA going up against Alien, Baywatch, and Pirates of the Caribbean (and Wonder Woman the following week.) Quite honestly, this one looks like a flop in the making, so they probably will push it out of the summer. The holiday slate in 2017 already looks jam-packed too, so they might push it to 2018.

I agree Blade Runner will likely move up to a prime summer spot. Especially if the studio thinks they have a real hit on their hands. Also I can see Baywatch moving to the end of July or beginning of August as well as see Life move to the fall, perhaps where Blade Runner is originally?

I think the Baywatch release date is fine the way it is. The only other comedy coming out in May is Mother/Daughter by Amy Schumer, and that's a very different type of movie. In August, you have Baby Driver and Chips scheduled to come out on the same day at the moment (both of which are also action-comedies.)

I don't think Sony will want Life to come out on the same day as Kingsman, and October 2017 already looks pretty busy. Maybe 9/22/2017? Or possibly September 8--when you consider Sully from this year (and The Visit and The Perfect Guy the year before,) the weekend after Labor Day is no longer considered a box office 'dead zone.'

They are really different movie, if they have a better date sure, but I could see that happening.
