An Idea For PAN'S LABYRINTH II:

the REAL history of the War of 1936-39, told impartially without taking sides!!!
Hey, why not? That story has not been treated appropriately in the movies--FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS and LAND AND FREEDOM don't do any justice to that war--, and the book of Hugh Thomas is perfect source material for a miniseries in which both Francisco Franco and Francisco Largo Caballero get their due.

Do you really feel a need for a film to show the fascist side? Are there not moments in history where there it IS possible to talk about right and wrong?

reply

Read the Hugh Thomas book; among other things, it shows convincingly that the 1936-39 War was not WWII in miniature.

Also, 'tis a very riveting story, and it helps to explain why the USA took on Spain as an ally during Eisenhower's presidency.

You can make a long list of allies during the '50s, and beyond, and much of America's problems today stem from being on the wrong side, not being able to tell the difference between short term, and long term interests.

Read the complete story; FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS, LAND AND FREEDOM and PAN'S LABYRINTH present very biased views of that war. You might as well be thinking of the War of 1861-65 exclusively in terms of THE BIRTH OF A NATION and GONE WITH THE WIND.
As for the USA's alliance with Spain, the USA never had reason to regret it.

I'm giving this political argument a rest, as we're clearly on different sides of a historical divide. I accept that there are other sides to the issue, and that people fighting on both sides were passionate about their beliefs.

However,as a Jew, I have trouble accepting the side of anyone who supported fascism in the 1930s, even though I'm educated enough not to compare Franco with Hitler in that regard. I also have problems with the Church, and its position on fascist leaders, and its silence in the face of the holocaust.

What FILMS do you recommend that could provide me with what you would call unbiased?

I assume our paths will meet again, on some other issue, and I'm looking forward.

Some years ago, a British miniseries--from BBC?--presented the story according to, I presume, the Hugh Thomas book. I wish I had it with me, because, as far as I can remember, it tried very hard to fill in the details that often go unmentioned.
My cousin, Jose Enrique Cabiya, told me what he thinks is the reason why the Left is so proud of its defeat in Spain: because it cannot feel proud of its victories elsewhere. Certainly its defeat in this war was more honourable than its victories in Russia, Poland, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Albania, plus non-European countries such as Ethiopia and Cambodia.
That was way back in 1976, long before the glorious events of 1989 and afterwards that proved beyond any doubt that the popular democracies never had any real popular support. One proof of this is in the coats of arms of those countries: Russia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Montenegro and Albania all restored their precommunist coats of arms, including in several cases the crowns of their monarchs, not because there were any monarchical restorations, but rather because those arms and those crowns were their REAL GENUINE NATIONAL SYMBOLS.

You would have liked the Second Marquis of Estella. He was a very sentimental man, and he was so touched by the loyalty to Spain of the Sephardim that he decreed that they be allowed to apply for Spanish citizenship.
