THERE NEEDS TO BE A BIOPIC ON BESSIE SMITH!!!!

this woman is the empress of the blues
she inspired some of the greatest female singers including billie holiday, dinah washington, and janis joplin.
she opened a whole new door for woman in music
a lot of music today can be rooted back to the sounds of the blues of the 20's, which includes smith

and 72 years later and with all the things she did and there is still no biopic made about her life. her story really needs to be told
and to suggest a person to play her i would suggest queen latifah, she would be perfect for bessie and maybe a good title would be "down in the dumps",a popular song of smith's

Queen Latifa as Bessie!

reply

i totally agree she is the best and only choice to play bessie...no one else could do it

And, as I've written before, on Paul Robeson.

Queen Latifah as Bessie? Yeah, I could see it.

Any casting ideas for Paul Robeson?

reply

There certainly ain't nobody else who could play Bessie. I heard there was one in the making. No inkling tho.

Glad to see someone's following up to my Robeson post.

Don Cheadle, maybe?

Just a quick story of how I met Paul Robeson. My father had a grocery store in West Philly, and in the late '60s I'd stop in on the way back from high school, fill groceries people would phone in, and take them around the neighborhood for tips (movie money, and later, weed money). Once a week or so I'd take a package to the corner of 50th and Walnut, and elder woman would let me in, and I'd see this old man sitting in a rocking chair, looking off into space. That was Paul Robeson!!!

Yes, he was a big man, a genuine athlete. But a good actor can PROJECT size.

I wouldn't insist on Don Cheadle, just that I've been on his bandwagon since Boogie Nights.
